Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
I don't think you'll get the volume through a trans cooler that you would with an oil cooler.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
I know you can get the stock adapter and tubing from GM parts. If you have a stock GM radiator, i believe the cooling lines just hook into the radiator. I have the adapter and tubing if you need pics.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
you can use an engine oil cooler for a trans, but not the other way around.
Internal tubing size on most trans coolers is too small.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
fwiw seperate is ideal, but the in-radiator trans cooler is extremely common and isn't BAD....simply not as good as running a seperate cooler.
imo if you would ever tow/haul then I'd make sure to run an external, as fluid temps will climb under that kind of load.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
The liquid to liquid transmission cooler in the radiator is MORE efficient than a liquid to air transmission cooler.
Running a liquid to air cooler in series with the liquid to liquid cooler is fine, But Never just a liquid to air by itself. |

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
I was always led to believe that a separate trans cooler was far superior than having the trans fluid cooled by hot water....

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
Please do so, I have mine run from trans to the trans cooler and back to trans, not thru the radiator.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
You're right, you do get more temp transfer in liquid to liquid exchange. But we don't want to heat your tranny fluid up with the radiator. Your tranny should be running cooler than the engine, unless you're pulling some serious loads in which you can cool the fluid a few degrees with the radiator (down to 185'ish) and then a few more degrees further via air to liquid exchange. As its already been mentioned here that they do this process. I believe my '06 vmax does this also.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
Most auxiliary liquid to air coolers are not even close to being large enough to cool a transmission by itself.
Modern transmissions with aluminum valve bodies perform better when the fluid is around 180 to 190 degrees. If your running just the liquid to air......The trans doesnt warm up like it should & you run the risk of it overheating in stop & go driving. I hope none of you guys are running a stall converter |

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
I am....but have a trans cooler installed so hot fluid hits the cooler in the radiator 1st, then goes thru the trans cooler, then back to the trans. I also have a trans gauge but haven't hooked it up yet....not sure what port to use on my 200-4r.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
ok...so normal trans operating temp is 180-190* anyway...which would make sense.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
The OEM's use the radiator cooler to also warm the transmission, if you livein a climate where temps get really cold, (i.e. Canada! LOL) it's possible for the trans to run too cool, so running it through the radiator controls the temps with the thermostat.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
Yall got me scared. I've got my 4l80e through a fin-tube external cooler rammed low and in the front, has god air flow to it. My rad is a be-cool but only has passes to cool the engine. Is there a good stand-alone cooler I can run to keep from burning my **** out? Luckily I have done mostly highway miles and it never go real warm.

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
I'd think adding an electric fan to the cooler would do about as much as increasing its size?

Re: Oil cooler suggestions?
im interested in this as i have yet to get to this point in my build. what i was planning on doing is whats already been stated. trans-->radiator-->air2liquid infront of rad-->back to trans.
ls1nova71 "I AM CANADIAN" lol, and here in edmonton we've been colder than siberia a few times in the passed few years (one solid week of -45*c or colder), but this is negligable because my truck will not see winter. my truck (turbo'd lq9, 4l80e) will see summer cruises to car shows, and trips to and down the 1320'. is there a "best" way of plumbing or is this another one of those arguable opinion deals? any help or opinions appreciated! kyle. |
