Winter finally got to my truck

It had small rust holes in the bedside by the wheel opening since I bought it, but the road salt finally busted through the cab corners. Can't wait till spring so my grandpa can show me how to replace the rust with patch panels and then its time for sandblast and paint! He's going to show me how to spray. (I bought the truck from my grandpa almost 3 years ago)

I'll see if I can get the pictures working...

I think it's great that you have an interest and willingness to learn and work on things yourself at your age. I was the same way,.......... in the garage and turning wrenches with my dad since I was a wee little lad. It's so rewarding to do a job yourself plus it's a good way to keep some cash in your wallet.

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

Does anybody have any opinions on whether LMC Truck or Classic Parts of America has better patch panels? I don't have any experience with either.

Thanks!

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

I beleive they are the same between LMC and Classic...could be wrong.

I noticed you were in Libby Montana....I traded an mint Red 86 Silverado 3/4 ton 4x4 in to them about 8 years ago. I was wondering if you could keep an eye out for it or maybe you know the person who has it. It was for sale last summer on craigslist, it has a 6" on it and the guy rearended someone so it had a grey hood and left fender.

Thanks! And that sounds really familiar... did you trade it to a car lot or a private party? It's a pretty small town

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

One of my buddies works for them... and that truck sounds really familiar... I don't remember the grey fender and hood though... Maybe they painted it? A lot of the times the car lots here will paint the rigs before they put them on the line. There's a lot of square bodies here!!

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

I have used LMC rocker and cab corner patch panels on both sides. Both fit perfect. Looks like youll only need to actually use about half the patch panel if that on the cab corners. Im going to bed line the inside of them or at least put some thick chasis paint to help it out later in its life.

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

It didn't have a gray fender and hood when I traded it, they guy that bought it got in a wreck. I "think" the truck is actually in Troy, it was for sale on CL last summer and I couldn't make the deal then but I can now but don't have his number.

Sorry to hijack your thread.

Sounds good!! Would weld-through primer work to keep it protected?

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

I'll definitely post the after pictures! New paint will be really nice... I talked to the guys that pour that salt solution (they came into the wrecking yard where I work to get parts) and they told me "the stuff we are putting out now is designed not to cause excessive rust"... This winter has caused my truck twice as much rust as it had this summer... I'm thinking its definitely excessive

I'm going to Montana State University - Northern in Havre, Montana. I'm really excited! I've heard good things about the school you are enrolled in. My shop teacher was telling me Ohio has some nice schools.

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

Yea what a load of BS haha! I been washing trucks since last summer. This winter all the semis aluminum has gotten so pitted and the trailers that don't get washed often have nasty discoloring I have been noticing. It sucks to wash my own truck in the winter. But I try to wash it every couple weeks and rinse off the frame and everything underneath to try to keep it from getting disgusting from the stuff on the roads!

Re: Winter finally got to my truck

I wish the last person that owned this truck's body (my grandpa told me it was a local concrete company) would have washed it like you do!! But at least it is giving me the opportunity to learn body work and get a fresh paint job before I leave for college!
