Bed wood stain color

First of all, thanks for all the help I have been getting recently. I appreciate it !

I am assembling my 64 and just laid out all the wood for the bed. Its red Oak.

I cant picture in my mind what color to go with the wood. I was thinking maybe a darker color, like a walnut? But I am not too sure how that would go with Orange?
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Especially since I only get one shot at this ... lol

Re: Bed wood stain color

How about a black stain like the original factory finish?

Not exactly the same orange, but the Copperhead project that Stacy David built on Gearz TV looks pretty sweet.

Re: Bed wood stain color

I'm a big fan of old dark walnut also, but you might also consider the original black - I think that would look good with Orange. But you really can't go wrong, make a best guess and run with it, it will look great. Nice truck by the way. When are you gonna paint the top of the cab white????

Re: Bed wood stain color

Not too sure about the black. The other one is nice.

Truck is going to be kind of a resto mod.

I am hoping it turns out nice.

Few specs on it:
built 406 small block
turbo 350 trans with 2800 stall
410 posi (for now) probably swap to 3:55
Frame off restoration ( took almost 20 years) lol
2 1/2" drop spindles with lowered front springs and 5" in the rear (as i recall)
Disc brake kit in the front
20" wheels to come with a 5 lug conversion
Vintage Air

Here's another picture. ( haven't changed wheels and it is on jack stands in the pic)

Re: Bed wood stain color

I stained mine when I put new wood in it 15 years ago... I'm in the process of sanding it all off and I only plan on sealing it and not gonna stain it.

Re: Bed wood stain color

I just did mine and its the twin of yours. I used white oak with golden pecan stain by minwax with 5 coats of Helmsman spar urethane on top. Looks pretty good with the orange IMHO.

Re: Bed wood stain color

Fan of darker wood with the lighter paint myself, gives more contrast.... At any rate, buy a couple planks of the same type wood from lumber store, and test a few stains with that, laying them in your bed against the paint just to compare.

Re: Bed wood stain color

I don't care for stain. I usually pick wood of color I like and just drop a clear coat on it.

Re: Bed wood stain color

Keep in mind the more you sand the wood with finer grit each step will take less stain, so you will want to go darker color, as they said get some test wood same variety and work out your plan.

Re: Bed wood stain color

That walnut looks fantastic . I might have to test that for sure. I was thinking about just flipping over a board and testing the color or the bottom side .

I'm looking to do a cheap bed. Oak plywood was suggested and I was all but seeing it with the walnut stain...
