Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB for...?
around 4-5 grand. If so, I'm having a hell of a time. I was recently bitten by the 67-72 truck bug and have been searching ebay and craigslist for a solid SWB but haven't had any luck. I'm not looking for a perfect truck but one that is a solid starting point. I'd really like something that hasn't been all chopped up inside (aftermarket stereo & auto floor shifters) and would like it to be fleetside & have auto trans and ac if possible. I'm not wanting to build a show truck but would like something nice and original to drive on the weekends. I live in the Houston TX area. Any insight as to what I can expect in that price range or help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ps. I hope I posted this in the right place. Last edited by cericd; 06-13-2012 at 06:02 PM. |

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Aha - based on the title of the post only, I was spring loaded to say "of course!" Then I read your first sentence....
Yes, it's possible, but depends on your definition of "solid" and what you want for a trim level. I would say $4-5k would be the absolute floor price for the options you list and if the truck is decent shape. What you're describing to me, and what I'll bet you're looking for is probably more like a $7-8K truck minimum. Recommend focus on Custom 10s and Custom Deluxes - Cheyennes and Supers in condition you're describing will be $10K and up in most cases (in a swb). Don't feel alone, I'm having a hard time finding what I'm looking for higher prices than that ![]() As for where to post - this is a good place to ask - but to look for them, go to the Trucks for sale section and a) look and b) post a wtb ad (must be a member) |

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Thanks for the info Jocko. Yeah I figured I shouldn't expect a Cheyenne or Super for that amount. I don't mind having to refurb or replace stuff, ie interior, trim, suspension, engine etc. I just don't have the tools or know-how to do welding, frame-off, or engine work myself so I while I have great respect for those that are able to bring a $500 rusted out cab with a frame back from the dead, I can't imagine doing it myself. I've been spending a lot of time on this site absorbing all the knowledge and I just don't want to be someone who bites off more than he can chew and has a 3 year project that ends up getting sold without ever getting to drive it. I keep an eye out in the for sale section all the time but everything that pops up is so far away and I'd really like to see what I'm buying in person. Plus, I don't have a truck and trailer to haul a non-running truck back to Houston from wherever. But... I'll keep looking.

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Its hard around here! Best thing I can say is look out west. It is well worth paying the shipping to get one of those rust free beauties from Arizona or California. Its well worth spending a grand on shipping if its perfect because you cant get body work for that if you cant do it yourself. At least in my experience!

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
I paid two grand for my 72 GMC short 4X4 w/rebuilt 350 and auto trans. It is an AC cab but the AC had been removed. The truck had just a little surface rust but other than that it was in pretty good shape and I drove it for a long time before I restored it. They're still out there, just be patient and look at a bunch!

I agree with AirSpeed ...
They are out there and it's a buyers market. Look on Craigslist, ebay and on here of course ... and you will find your truck Best of luck ![]()

Don't get in a hurry, give it 4,5,6 months and your truck will find you. Search Craigslist every day, be ready to jump in the truck with cash and a trailer.

I poked around on CL and various sites and found this one for $2500. They're out there.

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Took me about a month of searching CL everyday and looking at a bunch of overpriced Junkers before I found my original condition 68 shorty that I paid 4k for.

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
I use this site a LOT. www.searchtempest.com
You can put in your Zip code and do .. maybe 500 mile radius. Type in what you want and ST will search all in one combined screen so you don't have to do the city search one at a time on CL. It is much easier. Search different combinations: just 'C10' Search for '<year that you want>' Chevy Truck The last two digits of the year etc. GMC if you like GMCs .. (?) Just be really patient. One will show up. Good luck man..

With enough money and time (and patience), anything is possible. The probabilities go away with the passage of time, but who knows?

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
While I was looking for mine, I've ran into a couple of very decent ones within your price range. I rememember, because my budget was also $5k and under. They just didn't work out. Try expanding your search to neighboring states. I'll keep an eye out for you. I love to browse classic trucks/cars. haha

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Took me a couple months and a 800 mile round trip drive to find my 69 and I was looking for exactly what you described.
Cost me 6K

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
I've seen quite a few swb's come out of Dayton lately, mine included back when I picked it up. When I was still stationed in Abilene, these trucks are everywhere out there.

Re: Is it possible to find a solid 67-72 SWB?
Some parts of the country are easier to find than others so your searchand keep looking you are bound to find one sooner or later. I found mine three miles from my house and these trucks are never seen around my neck of the woods and there she was. the only rush was under the battery on the radiator support.
