any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

I'd love to have a front mounted winch on my 63 suburban 4x4
(never know when you'll encounter a big tree down in the road on a dark and stormy night, right?)
anyway, love to see any ideas. I'm hoping to keep the stock bumper, move it forward, and install some sort of flat pan between the truck & the bumper. might need to cut out the bumper and insert a fairlead?

Re: any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

nice! I really like the top blue GMC setup. subtle & near to stock look. saw a real nice one over on 4x4 /off road board, but I don't know how to link it here, or grab the picture. It's on a green & white shorty fleetside, from New York. Great looking setup, hardly know it's there. thanks for the help!

by the way, do you know anything about that last GMC with the stock bumper & all the holes....they must have been punched or pressed to do that? they're not just drilled out, from the look. never seen anything like that.

that one's really nice....that's probably a bigger winch than I need, too. I wonder if that is a PTO winch...kinda looks it, and i probably was much more common back then than an electric one.

There was no FACTORY winch installed. When a client wanted a winch, it would have been installed by a Dealer or sent to a Supplier who would have mounted it for the client. The dealership would have had a Silverbook to show the client the possibilities. Local Suppliers were also retained by the Dealerships to provide customer requests.

Re: any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

Thanks for the info, the old brochures are very cool. You seem to be well informed about these trucks. I guess the winch install was partially a fabrication job then?

I was told that my truck was originally part of a military order of 80 trucks that came with winches and 19.5 inch rims (unfortunately the previous owner told me he threw away the 19.5 rims because the tires cost too much!!!) I guess half of the order was taken and half sold off to dealers! Does that story make any sense to you?

Re: any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

The winch on my truck was installed with a torch. I don't know who did it but it's not very nice. I scrapped a 2WD and cut off the front section of the frame that I'll extend and weld to my cleaner cut frame.

Is it Canadian Built?

Re: any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

Yeah I have a 2wd 1/2 ton and a 2wd 1 ton (former tow truck) that I got for parts. I am thinking about swapping everything over to the 1 ton frame and basically building a 1 ton 4x4 with a 3/4 ton diffs.

You've got a plan, awesome. Are you dead set on 19.5"? If you are we'll look out for some for your project.

Re: any pics of front mounted winches, bumper treatment?

Yes I have been looking around for 19.5 SRW rims but finding the right ones is hard because it seems they had more than one design from 50's & 60's, maybe 3 or 4 different ones. And also made 19.5 DRW rims from what I have heard.
If you find anything from mid or late 60's I would definitely like to hear about it! I need the kind that 65 hubcaps would snap onto. Such a shame that mine got thrown into the dump, too bad!
But I have also been thinking about using 1 ton rims with duallies if I use the 1 ton frame as well.

Oh if you were asking about my truck being on Kijiji in Edmonton now it is not, I have had it for 18 months and never listed it.
