Re: need advice on 85 4x4
Difficult to really know without seeing it or even looking at photos. Does he have proof of the mechanical refurbishments?
Depending on the condition of the exterior paint and moldings and weatherstripping etc, I'd say from 2,000 - 2,500 unless it just really looks awesome. That's hard to imagine though with it having a few spots of rust already. Would be different if it had a new crate engine in it with 50k or less and a rebuilt transmission and transfer case. Redone seat adds 100, redone headliner another 100, new dash pad I'd add $200 if it fits good and nothing if it fits bad (repop) or is just a plastic cap (which is very popular to do and pass off as a new dash pad). When you say a motor has been "gone through", it really doesn't do that much for me. For all I know a 16 year old tore it apart and put new rings and such in it and called it rebuilt.

Re: need advice on 85 4x4
I'm not saying it is not worth $3500, but without me being able to physically see anything that's all I can tell you. A normal old running/driving square that is 84-87 is about 2,000. 4x4 adds 500 if it is all working and not one of those "will work if you put a front driveshaft in it" type things.
Drivetrain rebuilds are very hard to judge if it was not a crate engine replacement with paperwork and mileage listed to verify. I've just seen far to many people who do it themselves and even send it out for machine work and it is just junk within 100 miles. Even for the do it yourselfer type person it is very hard to beat the crate engine prices, especially when most 1/2 tons in the 80's were just 305's.

True on the crate motor , the only real gage is he drives it back and forth to work(80miles)for a couple of years.
