327 vs 305

I haven't been able to figure out why the exhaust smells so bad on my 327. I bought it years ago from someone who swapped it out for a BBC but he didn't have any issues with it. Not sure how long it sat before I bought it, but I didn't install it for a couple of years later (bought the motor before I found the truck). I stored it covered outside but did notice some water in the oil during the install. I changed it but have noticed a little smoke & a pungent odor. I came across someone who rebuilds early Camaros. He has a 305 out of a 93 Z28 with 40K miles that he wants to trade. I know I can have mine rebuilt, but this is free. Yes, not as much power as the 327 but I'm not planning on racing anyone. What do you think?

Re: 327 vs 305

Not much more work to pull the heads on your 327, install new head gaskets and set those 305 heads on there Depending on you're current pistons/heads would likely raise your compression and get you some more power (down low)...

Re: 327 vs 305

Don't even consider trading a 327 for a 305...

Re: 327 vs 305

Trade a tired 327 for a 40k mile 5.0? Free? Sure!

This is an economic win, despite the fact that others will insist the Apocalypse will surely follow if you put a 5.0 in there.

Look, unless you're sentimental about your 327... it is a running core engine worth maybe $150... I know, I just sold two of them last month.

I would trade and enjoy your new engine. You can always build the engine you want but this seems like a good deal to me.

In the end... your truck, your money, your choice

Re: 327 vs 305

The didn't make a 305 in a camaro in 1993

If it is a 1992 305, then you need a electric fuel pump (no fuel pump lobe/ pushrod hole too small)

If your 327 is a small journal - never been machined block, it can command way more money than a 305 ever could.

Re: 327 vs 305

Never, don't get me wrong i like 305's, but trade a 327 for one no way. 305s are good motor but are like grass they are everywhere cheap.

14093627 is the id on back of the motor. I looked it up and it's a 305. If I do the trade, I'll keep the fuel injection. I'm running TPI on the 327 now.

Re: 327 vs 305

The later engine has some strong advantages. Roller cam for one, and better seals. Install a set of Vortec 305 heads from an L30 equipped truck and a carby intake and you'll make plenty of power. Downside is it takes a lot to make an impressive 305. Even if you build it to 400 hp, which is impressive on a 305, people still say "Yeah, but it's a 305." And it will require a different flywheel and possibly the electric pump as mentioned above.

If you can locate a 283 crank and an inexpensive set of pistons then you could build a budget 302 with the 327 block. Everyone Ooohs and Ahhs when you say you've got a 302. I bought a set of cast 9:1 pistons pistons from a company in AZ in the early '90s. Can't remember the company I bought them from but the pistons were Hy-Duty brand.

Re: 327 vs 305

I wouldn't take a 305 if you gave it to me. Maybe a 307. Make a 302 would be cool.

Re: 327 vs 305

Put the 305 in and put the 327 in your garage and build it right. Then when you have put the 327 back in sell the 305 and recoup some of your rebuild costs.
I have enough modern fuel injection engines. But heres nothing like the feeling of pressing the button on the dash of my 59 and that 327 jumps to life in an instant. Put the 305 in then youll be motovated to get the 327 rebuilt.

Re: 327 vs 305

I cl'd a running 305 w/roller cam for over two years for $100. Finally gave it away.
