Tired of researching... alternator wiring
It's probably been asked a billion times but I can't seem to get anywhere. I'm doing a serpentine belt swap on my '88 Blazer with a 5.7, and it came with V-belts and the two-prong plug alternator, with a small ribbed belt for that. I plan to convert to the four-prong one that came with the serpentine setup [actually original to the 1990 engine, but not the truck so when I did the swap I kept the V-belt BS].
The truck is an original 5.7 TBI with A/C and has all gauges on the dash. It came original with V-belts, the ribbed belt for the alternator, and a smog pump which is now gone although I will be putting A/C back in it while I'm doing this belt conversion. Just looking for the simplest way to make the wiring work!

The stock unit is a Delco SI. The 1990 unit should be a Delco CS.

Ditch the CS alternators. Upgrade to the CS130 or CS144. IDs: http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/GmAl...tification.htm Check out this monster on my truck. 145 amps!! It's out of '08 truck. Power options work great. Plenty of power for dual electric amps and stereo. Two wire connection make it work. One large wire, I mean AWG type to the battery. Another small wire to fusiable link connector on the fire wall. To power the alternator, I use an ignition power source from the fuse box. From the power source, the wire is connected to a light switch. The switch to the alternator. When the light is on, power is not but the alternator is not charging. The light will stay on at start up or until the alternator starts to charge. When light goes off, the alternator is charging. If I lose the belt or something goes wrong, I know because the light goes on. The alternator connection only needs power to the "L" connection. The wiring is simple and works great. Incase of a problem, I know where to look too. |

I did read a little about the newer ones, my problem is I have two CS alt's, one being a brand new junkyard find. [my last two TBI trucks had two alternators, and in fact I still have that wiring harness as well]
