out with the old, in with the new... Custom Camper in the works!

some of you may have seen my "Bye Bye Ol Blue" thread over on the 60-66 side. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=546472 Sold it the other day and am awaiting the arrival of the next project. Been looking for a Cheyenne Super Custom Camper for quite some time and finally found one and pulled the trigger. Special thanks to TimSS for his help in the search!!

Anyhoo, it will be here in a few weeks, but thought I'd share a little bit about it while I sit around and make parts lists and watch the money I made on the 66 disappear.

It's a 71 Cheyenne Super 20 Custom Camper - 350/TH400/4.10 with a/c and dual aux tanks. I particularly like the dual aux arrangement as the fillers are in the wheelwells. Bed in great shape (the metal), passenger side in great shape, driver's side needs a little work, but not a big deal.

It has some "issues" - needed a door and fender on the driver's side. Already nabbed one of ledzepp's med olive doors this weekend and am working on finding an original paint fender. Needs some brake work, a/c work, engine work, etc - but it's the combo I was looking for in one of my favorite colors. Have been collecting parts for some time now, so looking forward to getting her going. Plans are to first get it back on the road and enjoy it (or as much as I can with a 4.10 and $5/gal gas out here in Cali...) while trying to piece together an original paint body. Needs trans work, so a rebuild may be in order first. Whenever I eventually stop moving around some years down the road, I'd like to take it all apart for a resto at some point, but that all depends how satisfied I am with the pre-resto stuff. If I can get it looking decent, I might not touch a thing. Bed wood someday. Camper someday hopefully.

Note that 71 was an oddball year for emblems - the engine callout moved to under the side marker but the Custom Camper nameplate was still on the fender like a 69-70, so the Cheyenne Super emblems are superseded by the Custom Camper nameplate if ordered. For some strange reason, I kinda like that... (in 72 you would have both because the script Custom Camper went up to the door handle and the Cheyenne Super would have been on the fender). But I love the super interior, so will be fun to rebuild it.

Will update on progress if I ever make any - have to actually get it here first. For all I know, I just sent a 12 year old with mad hacker skills on a pleasure cruise to the bahamas...

Very nice start. I really like that green - it looks like the original paint and I bet it would even buff out to some degree. Did you find it in the desert? It doesn't look like it has much rust.

Re: out with the old, in with the new... Custom Camper in the works!

it's a fremont truck, but somewhere along the way it ended up in WA - which is where it is right now. Didn't appear to have much rust, but there is some on the driver's side door sill that will need to be repaired. And who knows what I might find under the carpet... All part of the fun. Or headache. No, fun.

Re: out with the old, in with the new... Custom Camper in the works!

that looks like a super truck I bet with some clean up work it'll look great and you'll have a jewel then.

I'm kinda sad to see ol blue leave home but it seemed to be in pretty good health and will live long time yet and if it means one flying the coop too bring life to another I'm all for that, and that 71 looks like it deserves it. good score

I'm not a veteran spid reader so i I gotta ask though what is the floor boards option? I'm guessing the wood bed floor.I just dont recall them reading "floor boards".

Sicklajoie - I was thinking of yours when I saw this one - really does look a lot like yours when you started - but nowhere as solid or nice. I only hope it can come close to yours when I'm done with it. You know, like 20 years from now... I was also thnking of yours with a white/saddle/white one I was looking at. Was yours med olive or saddle?? (my eyes are playin tricks on me in the pic).

yep, i'm pretty tickled it still had that on it. Don't think I'll be ordering any sport bumpers any time soon - kinda like the boat anchor look.

I had a bumper that looks identical to that put on by the Chevy dealer when I bought my truck. The one I have telescopes so it can be extended up to 3 feet to be used with a camper that extends beyond the end of the bed and serves as a step to enter the camper as well as a bumper. Guess that's why they're called step bumpers, huh? It's on the sales contract as "Span-O-Matic bumper". Over the years I modified it to work on an 86 Chevy dually and a 99 Ford. I still have it but it hasn't been used in 12 years when I bought a camper with a built in bumper/step. I wonder if yours also telescopes.
