Check your ground connections. Even if you use the relays you still need solid clean grounds.

Re: headlight upgrades?

I did the relay for the headlights plus sealed headlights with halogen bulbs (8.00 each) but I went one step farther on every light on my truck. We soldered a ground wire to every light housing, then ran a individual ground wire back to a grounding block, which was in turn grounded to the frame. All of my lights be they halogen or just the stock old bulbs are now twice as bright as original.......Kieth

Re: headlight upgrades?

I did not want to go through all the hassle of making up my own, so I bought what LMC is selling a premade kit for halogens. Since I wanted to upgrade the lighting system with a brighter light, this made perfect sense (at least to me).

LMC Cat # 36-3581 60-66 $29.95

You simply tie it into the leads from the fuse block and mount as normal.

It doesn't appear they have one for the four headlamp grills.

there is no difference between a 2 headlamp and 4 headlamp upgrade. same number of filaments, just double the number of glass housings. wiring a 4 headlamp system is exactly the same. hope this helps

Re: headlight upgrades?

I have been running this setup for several years and I really like it. Hella E-Code reflector lamps and Hella H4 bulbs. Very bright.

I just realized you posted the part number for the Dual Headlight Harness.
That's the one I need.
The Single Headlight Harness number is 36-3580

We will upgrade to hellas this winter, we were in a hurry to get the truck on the road last year that we skipped the time it would have taken to do the hella lamps. Now I can shop around for the best deal.......might even go on to HID's Kieth

ps, everyone makes this wiring out to be too complicated. Just think of it this way....when one installs the relays which in turn power the headlight, all your tired old headlight switch has to power is the relay (.25 amps) when the relay is switched by the old headlight switch the relay provides all the power the headlights need directly from the battery instead of routing all the power through the old headlight switch......lots better and yes one should install fuses on the incoming power from the battery to the relay cause you do not want to burn your truck to the ground if something gets shorted out.....Kieth

Have to agree, I've been running Cibie's and Hella's on our drivers and there's no comparison. Even with an upgraded harness and halogen sealed beams (or cheap H4's) you're still not seeing as good as you could be. Quality H4's like Marchal, Cibie, Hella, or Bosch will make just as much difference as a relay harness will. And with good H4's that limit upward glare on low beams, you can upgrade the bulbs to 80/100 watt to further improve visibility and still not blind oncoming traffic. If you drive any at night, it's worth getting GOOD H4's!

Maybe the newer trucks. Old trucks only switch between high/low via the floor switch. Even then the newer trucks have a lot of voltage drop, so the relays we add are used to reroute the headlight power straight from the battery with large gauge wires for no voltage drop at the bulb. The original wiring is only used to turn on either the high or low beam relay so it takes the load off the original wiring and switch.

Kieth, sounds like a good upgrade. Would you please do a quick-check as to what you think I should order to get comparable lights to what you got? Mine's for a 1966 C10 with 2@7-inch sealed beams. I'm not sure, and value your advice--like which kit & which bulbs to order with my kit. I already have the relay-system that runs current straight to bulbs, by-passing the switch with the high amperage.
Thanks, if you have time,
Sam
