Stock fuel tank question ?

I am working on getting a 71 GMC back on the road after sitting for 6 years with a 3/4 full tank of fuel ! Boy what a smelly job ? My wife says I still smell like bad gas 3 days after getting the tank out. I learned that if you put a lot of grease on the filler neck rubber when you go to pull it out, you can reuse it again. The inside of the tank has a lot of rust so I would like to use a 1970 tank I have that is clean, My question is what about the EEC lines on the 71 - 72 tanks ? Can you block them off or connect them to use a 70 tank ?

New tanks for popular models like that are reasonably priced. It is best to just get a new vone. You could use the 70 & block off the vent. Be sure the cap is vented.

Somebody must know about the EEC lines ? Can you retro fit a tank without the lines ? Would like to swap tanks this morning ? Come on Man !

X2 I put a non eec tank in mine, replaced fuel cap with vented one and no problems so far. (It's been 10 months)

I would think you could just plug the lines inside the cab and use the 70 tank.
You are saying the 70 tank does NOT have connections for those lines, correct?

You may have issues with the filler neck grommet. I believe 71-72 are smaller diameter neck, thus a different size grommet. You might not get that 70 tank neck through the 71 hole. Lube and/or heat may help make the grommet pliable.

Your gas cap will have to be for a 70, also. Probably need a vented one, since you won't have EEC lines to remove pressure.

My 71 has all the lines and the charcoal canister under hood. The 72 that I'm currently putting back together is missing the canister. So, I guess those EEC lines inside the cab just vent to the outside under the truck. I hope they're not gonna gas me out inside the cab!
