Onboard Air install with a York Compressor. Start to finish

Although I have a brand new Viair 444c, I think I'm going to go the York Compressor route. I picked up a 82 Volvo York 210 from a junk yard yesterday for $75 - already pulled which saved me a few hours.

I'm not sure if it has been posted before but here is some great information on installing a York 210 compressor....

Those things work great. Are you running it off of the engine or battery? Either way those things move alot of air. I built one years ago that ran off of a snowplow blade motor. It drew alot of current but filled 2- 5 gallon tanks in less than a minute. Lets see some pics!

I will be running off the engine. The bracket is the next thing to tackle but with the links above I should be able to fab up one fairly easily. Love your 4X4!

I'm guessing from your avatar ( which is pretty sick by the way) that you're running the compressor for air bags? Yeah the brackets are tough. What engine are you running?

I picked up a york compressor for free and have plans in the future to mount it where the old smog pump went on my 350, it sure beats all the batteries, noisy dc compressors and related items......not nearly as hard to do on our trucks as it was on the H2 in your example. Kieth

I really enjoy the one i have on my truck.I just need to make a diffrent bracket that would bring it closer to the bottom and not so high up. Delmo made one for his 66.

the one thing you might need to think about is the oil. How are you going to protect your valves from getting oil in them.

I have a nice little SBC 307. I should be able to mount it right above the PS pump and run my belt off the PS pump pulley...that's if I can find a short enough belt...if not, I might be able to run it off the water pump pulley.

Yes, it doesn't look too complicated but I won't know until I get there.

Geez Sick5, that is a great question that I have given thought. I have read the "screw method" has worked well to eliminate some of the oil for guys running just an air tank but not bagged rides. How are you protecting yours?

Hey check out my build thread in my sig for my '78. A few pages in I took pictures of the oil passage modification I did to the compressor to keep oil from going through the system. I would still run an oil/air separator though.

I just spoke to Sonny at Newmatics (Newmaticincs.com), he said I could put a trap before the tank and another trap after the tank...out to the valves. He said to mount valves a little higher than the tank and drain tank often.

I think I'll try the "screw method" and doing what Sonny has recommended unless someone can come up with better solution.

Sick5, I picked up some fittings and a check valve but other than that it's been put on hold until I finish up my "Z". I Z'ed the frame last weekend and I have a lot of work to do. I just love creating more work for myself! lol

I'll probably start building my York's bracket and install a screw in the York to help with the oil issues within the next few weeks. I'd at least like to get it mounted before I install the engine.

I am in west houston and just starting on a chassis for bags. We are going to run an engine driven compressor as well. If you have any brackets roughed out and need them cut out, I have cnc plasma at my shop. Drawing and cutting some for you would be no problem! That way when we get there,we have it ready to go!! There is also a shop in Katy that builds custom hoses. If you need help, let me know and I can put you in touch with them.

David72, Very cool! I live in the Jersey Village area. I have a strong little 307 so the brackets should be the same for your 283...not 100% sure.

The place I bought my York had two of them. I purchased mine for $75.00. It's out of an 82' Volvo. If you're interested, I'll give you his contact info. If you can, PM the shop info in Katy and also your contact info. I'd like to meet local members.

What year/make of vehicles are ya'll gettin the compressors for? Or just any old York will work? I can get one and start on brackets in the next few days once the shop is cleared out a little. I have the 283 in my 63 for mock up, although all it has is the alternator mounted currently.
