i dont have the money right now to get a 700r4 built by someone like maddog so im at a crossroads |

Re: question ?
Around town your fine. Also depends on rear gears and tire size. My 81 had 3.08s with 295/50/15s I would run to CA from LV and back with th350. I was out yesterday in my 1962 with 406cui and I ran in 4th (1:1) more than droping down to OD (.65:1) T-5 5 speed manual.

Re: question ?
don't bother with the 700r4 imo, if you really want the o/d either convert to a computer run tranny and get the controller OR, get a GearVendors unit behind the 350/400. I've heard nothin but great things about the GV units, and they can take some real power.

Re: question ?
sorry to chime in but i think he ment that the tranny might be a #'s trans and that someone with a chevelle could use it ,,U might be able to sell it for enough to buy a fresh t400 ,someone looking for a t400 #'s match might drop down sum denaro for it aloha hop

Re: question ?
When my powerglide on my '62 gave up its last mile, I replaced it with a th350 I had laying around. I'm not sure if the powerglide was just noisy or what, but the th350 sure was quieter, and I gained about 2mpg. Might be the weight difference. I get 18 mpg with it now. Nothing like the 10 mpg increase I got when I removed the 2 barrel carburetor the last owner kept to try and keep it looking stock with a 350 motor. 4 barrels is way better than 2.
When I changed transmissions, I had never removed a cast iron transmission before, and didn't even realize there was such an animal, so I about lost my hand when it slipped of my jack as I was pulling it out. Anyway, how long are you planning on keeping the transmission in there? If it's just a temporary thing, why does it matter? |

Re: question ?
I'm a GV o/u drive fan, but the price is outasite - you could buy a sturdier-than-stock 700R4 or 2004R from several aftermarket trans shops for less than the gv unit alone.
If money is the issue, it's worth the wait to save a bit and buy an o/d trans that can handle your warmed sbc. If you will never see highway miles, then just keep what you have, it'll be fine. |
