I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
I am in the middle of a build and was just going to repaint my 85 the same colors. They can be seen in my avatar. However I have always liked the gunmetal gray trucks too. If I go back to the colors it was then there is no side trim except fender well trim and fender badges. No cab trim except drip rails.
Now if I go with the gunmetal then I would probably do all side and cab trim plus the fender wells and badging. The gray has a more classy look to it I think. Although the burgandy and silver has a bit more pizazz to it. Keep in mind this will have a 4/6 drop on WV 037 vette rallies and a probably put on my cowl induction hood. Still up in the air about putting the roll pan on or just puttin the step bumper back on. In the end it is my decision and what I make I have to live with but I would like to hear what everyone thinks. I will put up a couple of pics of what the truck looked like and one or two of gray trucks.

I personally like the 2 tone. Yes it does look kinda dated, but so is the body style.
How much would have to be changed in the interior if you went all grey? Bottom line is what ever you decide, you have to live with.

I like the gray cause I think it can look a little classy I guess but at the same time it is kind of plain. I do believe current colors are more attention getting. Who knows what I will do. Still trying to decide. I still have time before I have to make my decision.Of course I could go the other way and paint it white. Always like them too. My body guy told me to just drive around and maybe hit some car lots and see if there were any colors that I liked. It sounded like he wouldn't be able to match the current colors. All he has to compare to are paint chips. Thanks guys, I just wanted to see what you all thought.

Sounds like gray is getting the upper hand. The current colors are not the factory colors like Bruiser stated. The factory color was Apple Red. Victory Red might look good also.

You can't go wrong with either. I do really prefer the two tone paint though. I have restored trucks with both solid silver base/clear and with two tone and both looked good but if I had a favorite I would have to say the two tone was my favorite.

Grey = Metallic Primer
Color choice is a tough one (for me) because I like most everything. Good luck and take your time choosing. You'll be stuck with it when it's done. |

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
The truck in second photo looks great! I love red cars in general, never had a red truck. The burgundy metallic does not thrill me. Not crazy about silver unless it's got high metallic content and many clear coats to really bring it out. Most silver paint jobs are drab. So, I sez go with the gunmetal or something else. What color is your interior?

The current colors don't look factory. As much as I like 2-tones, that grey looks good.

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
I'd go with the grey. It is still a prime choice for my truck as well.

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
If the factory saw fit to paint it Apple red and frost white with burgundy interior and you like those colors, I say go for it. :-)
I like the look of the side trim mounted at the same level as the side marker lights. That is a perfect spot to transition from one top color to a different base color for a two color paint job. IMO, that would be a really good look on a squarebody, especially a short bed. The accent color down the middle looks good on long beds, but makes the shorties look even shorter (too short). For two-tone paint jobs, my preference is to have the lighter tone on top, darker on bottom. All JMO, though. |

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
I have a question about paint, anyone used Kirker paints, or their paint kits?
Also opinion on best primer for an un-sandblasted frame, and cab/bed underside?

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
If you like the gun metal then I would look at replacing your silver with that and change your burgundy to something darker. I like the 2 tones

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
I have a couple of questions before I offer paint color advice? It seems your planning a resto-mod look with the possible two tones. You mention a cowl hood, and your running a visor. If your keeping the visor, and adding a cowl hood, I wouldn't worry about what looks "factory". Those two items, especially the visor kill the factory look.

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
N2TRUX, I guess maybe I should say that I am not wanting any kind of wild paint job. Just something that is more along the lines of a factory look be it with or without the add ons. Nothing has been set in stone about the hood, visor, or roll pan. My thoughts have been to build this truck and either a short bed 4x4 or a K30. With that said I thought I might put the cowl hood on the C10 verse putting it on a K truck. I do have a nice factory hood on the C10 now with hood emblem. I will be putting on the GM doors and fenders that I still have in the boxes not that it has anything to do with the paint.

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
For a solid colored truck I like this look with maybe the addition of the cowl hood. Mine will set about the way this one does with the same wheels. Mine has a different grill and bumper on it.

Compromise and go with a two tone gray?

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
Good attitude. Personally I don't like a visor on these trucks. Regardless of my personal opinion, let me try to offer some artistic guidance.
If you like the stock look of a two tone paint job including the trim, all the aftermarket add ons are going to kill that look. If you like the add ons, your better off going with a solid color paint for a "refined" custom look. Does that make better sense. A perfect example would be the 73-80 truck previously posted. We know thats not a factory color combo, yet it pulls it off perfectly. Why? Because it looks stock on the outside, and has the correct two tone pattern. If they had added a roll pan, hood, and visor it would not have the same look. I really like these combos- If you really want to see some great two tone option take a look here- LINK. Keep in mind the 73-80 two tone breaks are not going to look the same on a 81-87, but it gives you some ideas on what colors look good together.

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
That blue one looks great. On the other hand N2TRUX the black with full trim combined with big wheels and lowered on N2TRUX's ride not only looks great, but the black would work with the burgundy interior.
It's good that you are taking the time to explore different options. I've waffled back and forth on the lower or not to lower question for years now. Love the lowered look, and it would be a lot easier to load/unload. Mine's only a half-ton, so can't carry much of a load anyway. Not crazy about doing c-notches and an axel flop tho. Of course, some people need the ground clearance or just prefer the look... Decisions, decisions! |

Re: I would like to hear your opinion about painting my truck.
Let me know what colors you want, and I can mask it over a members truck so you can see what it will look like. Thats how I decided on mine. I use to be a graphic designer, still am just changed industries now I work more with AutoCAD and Solidworks. I'm sure someone can do better than this, but it works. Just let me know your top bottom and pinstripe colors.
Here is member McSwine's truck with color changes. His is origionaly blue and gray. |
