Another 292 Power Steering Thread
Hey every body, i have lurked here off and on for a while now.
Picked up a 66 short step side no engine or trans and set about patching rust... Hopefully there will be images here... Looking for parts i found this long fleet and its a driver I know what your thinking... i thought there was a damn power steering question? Well i would like to drive this a bit but want to put power steering on it. Yep, so its a 292, i bought the whole power steering and HEI ignition off of a 73 truck yesterday! Everything i read says the 292 brackets are very rare, BUT these 292 brackets won't work on my 292 They came off of a 73 292 yes im sure it's a 292 due to the 6" tall block side covers. Well I guess they changed the thermostat housing and water pump at some point in the 292 production to eliminate the cursed bypass hose that makes the bracket so rare. SO i guess that not only is the 250 different than the 292 due to height but a 292 is not just a 292. The 292 bracket i have wont clear that hose So my question for anybody that knows, can i change the water pump and thermostat housing to the new style and use these 73 brackets??? Do i just have to fab my own brackets??? Thanks guys, lots of great truck/info and inspiration here! Always wanted a 66 stepside, never would have tackled one without this site! |

Re: Another 292 Power Steering Thread
You can change the engine front parts to the later model but you will need the damper, water pump pulley & alt brackets also. 1975 up was when it all changed.

Re: Another 292 Power Steering Thread
Wow, that was fast.
Thanks guys, i have read most of those links. If the specifics about the different versions of the 292 water pumps/thermostat housing and how they relate the the different versions of the 292 power steering brackets was there i missed it. Well as it turns out i did get the harmonic balancer as well as the alternator and its bracket. Really the only thing i didn't get was the Thermo housing. Guess i better go back and get that. Think ill go new on the water pump.... Thanks Guys What a great resource this place is! |

Correction, if anybody finds this searching.
The parts shown in these images are off of a 76. |
