Another stereo system thread.
So in the 81 GMC I just bought I'm lookingn to add some tunes. Currently it has neither speakers or a radio. The dash is also uncut. I'm looking for the cheapest but still decent sounding way to add a system. I have a jvc head I can put in it but not sure of I should just find a two knob radio instead so I keep from cutting the dash. I see retro sound makes a nice one but way out of my price range. The truck is beat up and I'm not looking to restore it so cutting the dash is okay. Also when it comes to speakers, truck was equipped with the 4/10 in the center of the dash. In thinking of putting two 4" speakers there and some behind the seat. I like the idea of the cab corner speaker brackets sold by a fellow member on this site but again more than I'm looking to spend on an old beater truck. I can always do some boxes back there but I wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas.

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Make a center console and put the radio on it, and put 2 speakers on the side, just an idea do
Maybe sell your dash and buy one that has already been cut, you will probably have some extra cash, just an idea do Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Another stereo system thread.
cut the dash, then you can buy a pioneer with BT for cheap. also add 6*9 in the rear and replace existing speakers in the front and enjoy

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Amazon makes a self powered slim sub by lanzar for 120 it makes a shabby system rock. Fits under the seat no probs. Great bang for the buck.

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Alright picked up some 4" for the dash and think I found a pair of 6x9 boxes I like. Non just to find a food deal on a pair of 6x9s.

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Your 81 should have cutouts in the corners of the dash for the 4" speakers. I made a plate to put them in the 4x10 location since my 76 only had the one 4x10 hole in the center. I made boxes for 6x9s in the cab corners and eventually cut 6.5s into the kick panels. The kicks made a huge difference and to be honest if I didn't already have the 6x9s I wouldn't bother now.

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Im going to be honest, i cut my dash. if you do it right it works fine and looks like it came out that way. just my opinion its your truck though buddy do it the way you want, i got a jvc head unit a 1800w power acoustik amp and 2 rockford fosgate r1 12s, sounds good.

Re: Another stereo system thread.
Just me but I was reluctant to cut anything. I bought my 77 c10 because it was old school and wanted to keep it that way. I found an old Jenson post radio on eBay and followed the lead from another poster hear on putting a couple of 4" pioneers in the center dash hole. I then put a couple of 6x9's in the cab corners. Sounded terrible until I found an old 2-channel amp to drive the 6x9's more. Huge difference. Wasn't looking for a thumper. Just needed to be able to hear it over the truck while cruisin.
