62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

I have a 1962 C10 with a 73 K10 12 bolt rear end - 11 5/16 x 2 3/4 rear drum brakes.

I'd like to try and keep a factory style e-brake system... 62 front cable should still be usable if I keep the levers/bars at the center point of the frame.

It's been a while and I'm wondering how to get the rear cable length right for the later style backing plates and still tie in at the center point levers -

I figure it's that or scrap the bars and go to a 66 C10 style set-up with all new cables.

Would someone school me on a solution?

Thank you,
Bob

I haven't done this, but I would think the cables from your '62 HO32 should work in that '73 12 bolt.

I was thinking the same until I saw an illustration on a website that seemed to include a 2 bolt tab or flange at the backing plate mounting point.

Then as I was looking at the 62's rear that I just pulled and the cable looks to be the same as my 73 rear end.

I did the 66 style cables on my last 62 project and I could go that route but I have a nice front cable and all the bars for the center point so I was hoping to just keep it stock if possible. It was working when I bought this truck but the rears are stretched and one is starting to fray.

Thanks Capt -

Re: 62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

DORMAN's listing calls for a C92240 for L or R rear e-brake cables with 3 speed which my C10 WAS, 70.88" overall length... GM OE# 3760994.

My cables are @ 62" from the backing plate to the front clips (hard to believe that the other 8" is inside the drum) haven't pulled the drums yet.

I don't see the little two bolt tabs unless they are inside the drum as well.

I'll pull the drums tonight.

The pic of that cable looks like what I have typically seen on the C20's with the Eaton HO52/72 differential.

That looks like the same cable that would be connected to a '63-'65 12 bolt.

Re: 62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

Spent some time in the NAPA E-Brake cable book last night and the 63 to 65 C10 115" wheel base L & R rear cable is Dorman PN 92285.

92285 is pictured and according to Dorman's listing it's longer (79") and has no clevis bracket for pin on frame end.

Called The Truck and Car Shop and spoke with Laney who pulled the cable they stock for my 62 and described it and it sounded right. She said she would snap some pics and email me but I haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks again Capt...

Search continues.

Re: 62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

I remembered to take a look at a '62 GMC frame I have at the shop, and the e-brake cable looks similar to the one shown in post #5. I didn't have a chance to compare it to a '63-'65 cable yet.

Re: 62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

63 also had two different style cables. There was a change in mid 63 too a different style end.

Re: 62 C10 Rear E-Brake Cable on later 12 bolt rear end

I still haven't heard anything from The TS. I'm sure they're very busy.

I can't believe I'm the only guy to ever run into this either.

The Dorman 92240 cable as listed as a cross to the GM part is NOT THE SAME as what came off the 62 rear end.

Lot's of stuff changed in 63 - some days I wish I had held onto the 63 GMC that I had for many years and just built it back up.

At least it's Friday
