A sad day
This is my '09 Silverado 50k miles on it. heard a slapping noise and then it turned into a vibration and then check engine light. I was about a quart low at 2500 mile oil change, but that should not cause this damage. I had been checking my oil and I think that is the lowest it has been. I know these things eat oil but come on. dealer said that did not cause this. I feel this kind of damage would be caused by 4+ quarts low. Thank god for warranty. The worst thing about this. I am driving my dads Toyota. I need my truck back

Re: A sad day
I can't seem to post pics right now, I will when I can. I smoked the cam and a lifter. Anyone else have this problem? what causes this and is there anything I should look out for in the future? Should I be using Synthetic oil?

Re: A sad day
Did more than one lifter/lobe show any signs of heat discoloration?

Re: A sad day
Did your oil filter have a by-pass valve?

Re: A sad day
Some filters have a spring loaded bypass valve which comes in handy if element is plugged. Not so handy if metal shavings are floating around. Not unusual for filter bypass to lift when cold engine started because oil is thick and element pressure differential is high; this allow the shavings free access to galleys and bearings.
My 1st choice would be new long block in your case. If filter has no bypass I would consider reusing current short block if price dictates. |

Re: A sad day
Can squeeze oil out in vise to see how much metal is reaching filter.
1st pic: Fram and Mann don't have filter by-pass. 2nd pic: Fram, Wix and Motorcraft have filter by-pass; ACDelco no by-pass. |

Re: A sad day
A friend of mine had this happen back at the beginning of the year on his '09 with about 70k on his. The dealership told him they had a few other trucks in there at the same time with the same exact problem!

Re: A sad day
Dealer got it back together weds and now there is a miss in another cylinder. Gm told them to get another cam. Dealer ordered it but said they noticed a lifter in that cylinder was not seating right. Ordered another lifter and are going to try that tomorrow

Re: A sad day
So I called the dealer again to voice my opinion on not pulling the motor out and going through it with a fine tooth comb. Their hands are tied so I called GM. They asked what I would like, I said to either pull the motor or install a new small block. Should hear back on thursday

Re: A sad day
please use a better filter in the future. the orange can of death has killed plenty of engines. going from a fram to a motorcraft filter in one of our racecars pushed the oil pressure from 30psi to 50psi at idle.
the oil consumption issue, from what i have read, is from the AFM. my 6.0l in the z28 doesn't use a drop of oil, and it gets beat on hard. i just picked up a 2009 z71, but haven't put on enough miles yet to see if it consumes or not. i would definitely hold out for a short block if it were my pickup.

Re: A sad day
No new engine. But got a 3 year 45,000 mile warranty on my engine starting today. So I guess I can live with that. What about purolator filters? On a side not. I talked the dealer into giving me a ZL1 for about 20 min on my own and Damn
