steering column woes

I've got a 66 GMC. The detents for the gears is worn out, keeps coming out of park and sometimes slips from drive to second. would like to replace the column or repair it if posible. Also is there a self canceling switch for the turn signals? Being old and deaf I tend to drive for miles with the turn signals flashing.

Re: steering column woes

The column was designed with a self canceling switch. Either the plastic switch or the plastic cam is broken if they don't self cancel. The replacement parts are available through most online/catalog companies. They are an easy fix too. You will need to pull the horn cap assembly & steeringwheel (w/puller) and you can gain access to replace the parts. I have pics at work that I can post tomorrow if no one posts them 1st. Not a bad idea to replace the upper steering column bearing if you have lots of play on the column while your in there.

Re: steering column woes

you will want to order a cam and a cancel cam. they will be the two plastic pieces. the upper bearing is the part with the two wires attached, which are for the horn. id inspect the bearing before replacing and definitely get the cams at the very least

Re: steering column woes

You can also get these parts at most regular auto parts stores. Foir the price and the time involved, I would buy a complete new switch and new cancelling cam and be done with it.

Re: steering column woes

Hey thanks a lot for the help. I can get right on that part of it. It's nice to have such a great knowledge base to go to. Is there any one who can tell me how to fix the shift point detents so the thing will stop coming out of park at inappropriate times? Great help guys thanks again
