Budget Suspension

All c10 riders I need your assistance slash opinions. Im a novice so I apologize ahead of time.I purchased a 63 step (rough drivable farm truck) but my heart was set on the 67-72. Started tearing it down for rebuild and everything was going great so of course while searching for parts I come across what I wanted 2nd gen. YYYESSS! But had to get wife on board-Ah man! Anyway she went for but I cnt do a full resto on my daily which wll be the 63. Ok no prob so now to what I need your help with,the truck is a little sloppy up front steering is a little loose(aftermarket steering wheel). I took of driver wheel grab the drum and went from left to right and everthing moves a little. I cn grab the steering arm/shaft and turn back and forth as well. So what do you think I need to replace and can i get by with this old truck on the rode by just replacing all the front stock parts I will only be only driving total of 30 miles a day to and from work.

Re: Budget Suspension

You know the front suspension crossmember off the 72 would bolt in place of your 63 crossmember, giving you the disc brakes, 5 lug wheels, and the ablility to run power steering.

Take a look at the 60-66 FAQ. Since your an admitted n00b , look there first.
We also have the search feature, or you can go into a sub forum and click "search this forum" or "Search this thread" to narrow things down faster.

If everything moves, no way we can tell you whats worn out.....
If you can turn the wheel a few degrees or more but nothing in the suspension moves, then the problem is in the pump or before (pump, steering shaft, column, or wheel).

If it does feel "tight" and things seem to move accordingly, then its after the pump;
Things like the pitman arm wear out, the tie rods, the drag link, the ball joints.

The only way to know what wrong is to actually lift the thing up and see whats broken...

Because the word 'noob' was used here, it's worth clarifying that the description 'pump' as used here is actually the steering box (& not a pwr steering pump).

The front end of the 63 should be easy enough to service w/fresh parts to get you back & forth.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.
