LS 4x4 crossmember issues

We all know that the stock 67-72 4x4 c-member is a problem with LS swaps.


Can it be fixed with a different oil pan, or do I have to shell out $300+ for a new crossmember?

I was able to make mine work, the main issue was with the perches which is what had to be modified the most. The crossmember itself was an easy fix if you happen to have the tools and minor fabrication skills to do so. Which obviously makes all the difference.

I think it was the width, so a pan swap isn't the solution...

The crossmember is too narrow, but if you have a saw and welder you could widen it to make it work like 71chevystep4x4 said. I'm not positive, but I think that crossmember is a little more available from other companies than it used to be. If you want to take a stab a building your own i took measurements and photos of the one I bought from Pacfab in CA. I would gladly share them.

What I did was cut the front out of the perches, then I elongated the holes so I could slide the perch upward. So then I had to trim about 1/2 inch off the top edge where it would run into the inside of the frame. From there I cut out and squared up the passenger side inner elbow of the crossmember where it hit the oil pan. Last but not least, I had to take a cut-off wheel and remove some little tabs on the oil pan, as well as a few on the engine. None of these really served any purpose at all.
