What auto trans for a 8.1 vortec swap
Hey guys I'm going with an 8.1 vortec in my 72 4x4. I want to keep it auto. Would I need to look for a 4l80e from a 4wd truck or will the 2wd version work?

2wd will work if you want a 2wd drive only you'll need 4wd one

Is there a was? Yes, with the right output shaft and extension/adapter.
What transfer case do you plan to use?

Yeah you can make it work. But you have to change a few things. You should be able to google it.

what trans is in it now?...you could jus have that one rebuilt..unless you jus wanna go with OD trans..

not sure what transfer case im going to use and right now i have a th400 but i do want to switch to the overdrive

If you don't know the difference between a 2wd and 4wd trans you probably shouldn't be attempting this swap on your own.

jon i never said i dont know the difference im trying to find out if i can make a 2wd trans work cause thats what i could get a hold of right now. and thats what forums like this are for bud to learn

I'll skip all the technical stuff.
Is it possible, yes. Is it practical, worth it, normal, or something that anyone here would have an interest in doing...no. www.car-part.com if you can't find a 4wd trans there, then your lying to me.

I didn't mention, the output shaft replacement requires extensive tear down of the transmission.

I think they have a 4WD option......you could keep your turbo400 and put a Gear Vendors overdrive behind it.

Or you could get a divorced NP205, and a 2wd trans will work fine. Just another option.
