Decided to Rebuild My 61

Well, the more I worked on the truck the more I found that needed fixing. I swear, I don't know what previous owners were smoking! So my boy and me tore it down and will paint the frame this weekend, for starters. Frame looks good as far as rust goes, but it has a bunch of holes drilled and cut in it that don't belong there. I guess I will weld em up. Anyways, cover me...I'm goin in!

Re: Decided to Rebuild My 61

If you can get your hands on it use POR-15 to paint the frame. Wear old clothes and gloves. But its great stuff. If you look at our build thread it shows pics of the frame after we coated it with the POR-15. Its expensive but worth it.

Re: Decided to Rebuild My 61

I have seen the POR15 results. Looks great. I have a bunch of leftover BBQ pit paint that I was thinking of using but I don't know much about POR15. Lemme look into it.

Re: Decided to Rebuild My 61

Im sure your black paint you have on hand would work just fine. especially in Texas. Not that we drive our trucks on the salt encrusted roads in the winter, it still amazes me how much easier it is to work on west coast or southern trucks.

Re: Decided to Rebuild My 61

I build smoker pits every now and then and I love the way this pit paint looks when imagining it on the frame. I wouldn't wanna paint the body with it though unless I'm going with a 2 tone job, which I'm considering. It's some tough stuff and easy to use as touch-up. Here's a pic of my last pit I made so you can see the lack of gloss that I am looking for.

Re: Decided to Rebuild My 61

In my years of experience with high temp paint, it does not provide much in the way of rust protection until it has been cured. I wouldn't use it on the frame. If you're looking for a budget satin black paint, get some John Deere Blitz Black paint. Member markeb01 painted his entire truck body with it, and having seen it in person, it does look good.
