230 swapping in 700r4
Hello,
I am planning on swapping a 700r4 into my 64 with a 230. I have been reading many of the forums covering this swap and hope I understand it as much as I think I do. I wanted to run my plans past those with experience and see if I am missing anything. I acquired a 68 c10 crossmember and mount the flexplate and correct yoke. should I get a new radiator or is an external cooler enough? I think I can modify the "linkage" off a 250 with an auto to actuate the TV cable. I am undecided on how I am going to control the lockup and the brake switch cutout. ................................................. In the future if I wanted to swap in a small block would it be a straight swap? Any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

you should go with the 2004r because it has a closer 1st and 2nd gear.. the 700 is a big drop from 1st to 2nd and the 6 will not like it at all. I believe some one on here has done the switch and figured out how to do the tv cable. I think it was the guy that was putting on throttle body injection but he hasn't been on in a while.

I am about to dive into a similar project this winter. I have a turbocharged inline 250, aka JED. I am running a T5 currently and would like to switch up to an auto to have better control with boost and cruise.
From my research I will need a: - 153 tooth SFI flexplate - fab a trans crossmember - shorten driveshaft - custom 2800 rpm stall w/ lockup - trans cooler and lines - 700r4 trans- wired for OD lockup - TV made EZ by bowtieoverdrives- http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=218 I have located a trans core (91 chevy C1500) for $100. A local trans builder will build it up HD, for $550. I am confident about the setup, just a little sketchy about the whole TV cable setup. We'll see! I've done the 700r4 swap on my 50 burb behind a 250 and with a 3:73 rear its great. The 250 has some HP upgrades that help and if it was stock I would definately go with 4:10. There are several diagrams online on the correct geometry for the throttle fulcrum and where to mount the ball stud for the tv cable hook up. Its very important to get the tv pressure corect or you will burn up the trans. Check with bowtie overdrives and TCI. After having a few 700r conversions, I like the TCI wire kit that locks up when shifted into 4th gear and uses a vacuum switch to unlock therfore not needing the extrA brake switch As the engine changes vacuum on decel. Its simple and I can now wire it up myself after buying the kit and seeing how they did it through the connector and the pressure switch.
On the burb I run an external dual pass cooler on the frame rail. It works greaT after the trans warms up. The 700s have a thermo protection switch for 4th geAr and won't allow that shift until it reaches the desired temp. Takes about 10 miles and then it shifts into 4th. I could have plumbed in a radiator/trans internal cooler to "warm" the fluid faster but had the stock radiator until last weekend and tossed in an aluminum one with the internal trans cooler. I have 26,000 on this set up since Dec 2012 and tow heavily with it in the summer. Its been a rockstar And my DD up until the 65 I picked up a couple months ago ( 350/700r4) Last edited by NEWFISHER; 12-08-2013 at 12:30 AM. |
