speedometer quit working

My speedometer on my 84' was working and when I got it out the paint shop it doesn't work anymore. I thought they may have forgotten to hook it back up but everything seems to be hooked up fine. Any thoughts on why it isn't working?

lots of times the cable will break especially if it was making a whirring noise beforehand also sometimes the gear in the trans will strip ( its cheap plastic) and once I had one break at the needle easiest thing to do is to see if you can unhook it from the trans and have someone watch to see if it moves from in the dash also if the odometer moves but the speedo doesn't its the gauge itself

I'll have to see if the odometer is working or not.
