LQ9 with early 4L80e
I have an LQ9 out of an '04 SS Silverado that I plan to start gathering pieces for to install into my '67 C10 soon. I was just given a working trans (4L80e) but it's an early version from '93. I see I will be missing the top (center) and right bell housing bolt if I were to try to use this… Will this work? and if so what else am I looking at needed to combine the two? Thanks for any input guys!

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
The top bolt thing is fine. The early 80s are a tad different in that 91-96 are essentially the same, but the 91-93 have a crap electrical connector where the harness passes through the case. You'd want a new harness anyway sine your running a different setup, so with a little heads up on the wiring, you should be able to use it no problem.
There are actually a bunch of other internal differences in the lubrications, the # of teeth on the sprag, and the way the cooler lines attach.

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
Thanks for the help guys. So as far as torque converters and flex plates, what kind of recommendations do you have? Factory 4L80e stuff bolts right up? I read somewhere about spacers etc. are needed on some applications, but it was about as clear as mud to me.
Again, new to this LS world, but so far this forum is a life saver!

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
I'm learning to but I think the spacers are for the 700r4 stuff are other older trans like the 350 turbo are 400.
My 6.0 came with a 4l80e attached so I'm good.

The 80e uses more bolts on the tq converter, which seems so much more robust than the ls-car style converters.

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
So the sum of it all… My LQ9 will bolt right up to the '93 4L80e with factory TQ converter and flex plate. I'll have to rewire the trans with the newer (better) style harness and don't stress over the top center and right side bell housing bolts missing. If that's the case, the trans is headed to the shop to be gone through! Thanks guys.

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
'67Nate,
That's how I see it! Ok, That's what I was thinking since mine has the 4l80e already hooked up. Didn't realize it had a spacer in it though. I had read that the 700r4 and others would work with spacers just didn't realize it was only for the 4l60! PS I did state I was learning to!

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
The EPC (Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid) In a '91-'93 4L80E is NOT compatible with LS electronics. A '94-'03 EPC part# 24209276 is the one you need, Bolt-in deal.
The original '91-'93 internal harness is NOT compatible either, Again a '94-'03 harness will work, Part# 24200161. A lot of the early 4L80E's have already been updated with a harness. But check to be sure. The early harness has a threaded hole in the middle of the connector, The late harness does not. |

Re: LQ9 with early 4L80e
Good post Cline, I was always told to change that stuff together, tho I didn't know it physically wouldn't work without doing so.
