Tell me what you think - Wheels

I was searching CL for a spare tire and came across a complete set of 6 lug rally wheels for $75. They need to be repainted, but they are pretty solid, 15x7 and 15x8. I currently have 15x8.5 aluminum slots. My dilemma is whether to keep the slots or ditch them for the rallys. Thoughts? Also, if I go with the rallys, I would like to hear opinions on trim rings (yes or no), black walls or RWL, and paint color. I think I'm leaning toward a gloss medium gray, a flat olive green, or gloss light tan. The truck is a flat black. Interior is a mix of gloss black, natural and black leather, and faded red/yellow door panels.

The rallys have a 4" BS and the slots only have 3". The rallys will get pulled back into the truck a little more. The way the slots look from the back (low) has always bothered me and more BS should help that a lot.

Here's what is on there:

And here is a test fit with the rally wheels:

I love the truck rally wheels.
If I could have gotten them in my lug pattern that's what I would have on mine.

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

I like both but if the figment on the slots isn't to your liking, sell 'em!

To me, Rally's should be original Argent silver, or as close as you can get. Yes, on original beauty rings and center caps. Yes on red line tires if you can find them reasonably priced.

P.S. Polish the hell outta the slots w/ raised white letters that scream '70's and keep them for occasional use when you feel like a change.

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

what is the name of the American racing wheels you have on there now?

I have rally truck wheels on mine, I like the look when they're painted to match the truck

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

I'm actually not sure what kind of slots they are. When I got my tires installed, I needed some center caps. The shop had a huge box of centers and those fit. I really doubt that they are American Racing. The only markings I have been able to find are the sizes 15x8.5.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I vote for the rallys . If they made 5X4 3/4" truck rallys I'd be on them in a heart beat. I agree with Dan about the argent silver, caps and rings.

Check out Early Wheel Co., they moved here to Morro Bay Ca. - Jason can make almost any ralley wheel/bolt pattern combo - and they are new and straight.

16"x7" 5x5's going on the '51.w/beauty rims and baby moons.....and Hwy 1.....

I say either the slots or the old muscle car rally's. Never been a big fan of the truck rally's. IMO

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

If they were the Corvette style rally wheels, I would say yes. But compared to what you have, I prefer the slots.

At that price I would get them even if it just for rollers on a future project or to trade to a buddy etc. And I love slots, wish they came in larger diameters.

I have always wondered why no one makes the slots in a 17" or 18". Maybe too heavy to be practical??? I would think they would sell like crazy. I did buy the rallys, so it's just a matter of making the choice. I'm going to blast and paint the rallys to see how they come out.

Yeah, well we KNOW it's the internet and all but there'll be no need to die for rims!

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

I like them both a lot.

The slots look very "70's". If that's your era and the look you like, then go with those.

The Rallys have more of a stock but newer look them. A little more bling because they are shiney.

It's really a personal decision and you should please yourself.

Re: Tell me what you think - Wheels

Are there obvious pros and cons to powdercoating wheels compared to quality (not rattle can), priming and painting ? I am leaning toward the catalyzed automotive paint because I can spray them here and for the eventual touch up possibilities.

I prefer the ralley wheels with the 5 ovals to the ones with the numerous square holes around the outer edge.

And what of the wheel(s) color - match the body color or a contrasting or complimentary color - too many years as a painting contractor - - - -

I'm wondering the same thing about how to do my wheels. I guess I'm leaning with powdercoating at this point.
My wheels are 16" smoothies.
