Vintage air AC question

Hey all,

Eventually will be putting a Vintage Air A/C unit in my 66. The old heater drew air from the outside vents, however from pictures I've seen the vintage air unit mounts entirely under the dash, so where does it get its air from? Does it just recirculate? If so, I wonder if making a solid piece above the hood to fill the open vents (with holes for washer squirters) would look better.
