Happens here all the time.
Tags get too high or it won't pass smog so off to the crusher.
Upside to it is you can get real nice parts.

Happened to Blazer Chalet #0407 a couple of years ago, couldn't pass CA smog for its long-time owner and he needed immediate cash, so a scrapper offered him a grand or so, who then sold it to a classic car dealer who attempted to sell just the camper unit for a grand while being forced to crush the remains of the Blazer. Don't know if CA allows a non-smog passing vehicle to be sold outside the state. The dealer I talked to sounded like there was no way for him to keep the camper & Blazer together legally....
