What to expect from salvage yard??

If I buy an "engine assembly" out of say a 1999 Tahoe/Suburban
what all would I expect to get with the assembly?

Should I expect a complete engine and the control box for fuel injection?

If I buy the transmission with it, same question, should I expect to get the control box.

Just never dealt with them except for small specific parts.

Unfortunately that all depends on the salvage yard in question.

Around me, the salvage yards are not all that reputable and you get whatever they have. The local pick-ur-part charges the same for an engine w/ harness as it does for an engine w/o.

I've found that I do better dealing with the local tow companies. I have contacts at all 3 of the local tow companies and whenever they get a truck they think I may be interested in they give me first crack at it before they take it to the salvage yard. (I pay them the same price as the salvage, take what I want, then scrap the rest) That way I can pull off everything I need without having to figure out what got picked over at the yard.

On the flip side, a buddy of mine in TN says that the local yards in TN and KY seem to be more reliable. Many of them pull the engines complete with harness and controller and sell them as a complete unit rather than parting them out.

Your best bet is to simply ask them.

I just found a 5.3 with 50k on it including trans. and all computers for 2750 in Spokane. They will reflash the computers for another thousand.

1000.00! Is that right or is it 100.00? I think I've seen 150.00 advertised.

For a grand you could buy everything you need to reflash/tune the PCM yourself.

You need to go over in detail what comes with the engine... Intake, throttle body, fuel rail and injectors, exhaust manifolds, waterpump, power steering, alternator, ac compressor, UNCUT engine harness, computer.... Also, depending on the year, you may need the electonic throttle pedal and control box.... if it's a 99 Tahoe it will probably a cable operated throttle body...

The computer can be reprogrammed for $150 or better yet, find a local tuner.

The transmisson also has a contorller and until recently it was built into the main computer. The newer trucks had a seperate EMC (engine management contriler) and TCM (transmission management controler)... Again, if its a 99 its all in one ECM....

Usually you get a 30-90 day warranty on parts.

If an LSx is what your looking for, there is a vendor here that will supply a COMPLETE ls motor, with harness and re-flashed PCM for a reasonable price.
