Newbie help 56 rear end swap
Newbie here, really enjoy reading the forum. I bought a '56 today from the wife's uncle. First thing I'm wanting to do is swap the rear end to a 5 lug disc brake setup. I'm looking for advice on which one to go with the smallest amount of modification. I'm nog looking to build a hot rod, but will eventually look to do a V8, auto conversion. Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Newbie help 56 rear end swap
Welcome to the forum. One question is why change the back to 5 lug disc, and leave the front 6 lug drum??? The front brakes do most of the work, even with discs my experience is I change the fronts twice a much as the rear drums. Is the truck going to be a cruiser on the highway, or just around town?? I've ran my truck with two different axles and just carrying two spares is a hassle. I'd just get it driveable as is, use it and start defining the end goal. Then work on the pieces that will do the most good. Also I do not know of anyone that makes a front drum/rear disc master cylinder, I guess you could just reverse the lines on a regular one???

Re: Newbie help 56 rear end swap
It's just going to be a weekend get around truck, I'm leaving the paint in the current patina. I plan on doing disc all the way around, main reason I'm changing is because aftermarket wheel choices are greater for the 5 lug.

Re: Newbie help 56 rear end swap
Funny this thread got started- I picked up a 3rd Gen Camaro rear end yesterday with the hopes of mounting it today (I had been told that it was a straight drop in), but the spring pads are an inch off...
Looks like I'll be doing some welding in the not-too-distant future |
