Re: 1980 GMC truck
Here we are getting ready to be moved for the first time in 4 years! The DOT on on the spare tire shows it to be from '86! Might be time for some new ones, drove it from Worland to Casper and got 15.15 miles per gallon and 1/4 of the tank was some of that 4 year old fuel and a average speed of 70 MPH. So pretty excited about that, don't think that it will do too well in town though because the tires are way bigger than they should be. I need to also get the factory cruise control working and the left rear brake keeps locking up, my Dad was not much for maintence. He had grain in the bed for the 4 years it was parked so there is some surface rust. Also tring to decide on the audio system, I have a head unit but don't want to cut the dash considering putting it under the dash. I need to look up hubcaps, it has bow tie caps on it that I like...

Re: 1980 GMC truck
Sounds like things are going well on getting the truck back on the road. What year, etc is your truck?

Re: 1980 GMC truck
It's a 1980 GMC Sierra Grande 1/2ton 4wd, it has the factory option 16 inch rims. I have just put new tires on it, only to find out that all 5 rims are bent. Previous owner beat it pretty hard LOL. Other than that it is a run of the mill 350 with a turbo 350 and a 208 transfer case. The engine I built for another truck when I was in high school, it was out a of truck that the engine was locked up on. Found water in one of the cylinders because the hood was left off with no air cleaner, I was able to disasseble without destroying the pistons and to the dismay of my auto shop teacher put new rings in it, rebuilt the heads and ran it. He said it would never last and it out lasted the truck I put it in for 7 years and then now in this truck for a couple years on my dad driving it (beating). I am in the planning stages of putting a air system in it so I can air put tires on the road and had minor use of air tools.

Re: 1980 GMC truck
I was looking at the registration for the truck and I did it May 1st. I found the receipt from when my Dad bought it in 1992 and was shocked to see that he bought in on May 1st of that year. Crazy..

Re: 1980 GMC truck
I am working on ideas to make the truck ride smoother... off road as well. I put tall profile tires on the should help, I need to replace the shocks. Checked cab mounts and they are still decent. Also having to replace 4 bent rims. I am debating and doing air over leaf, or just doing air shocks.. Any suggestions??

Re: 1980 GMC truck
I think there might be leakage between the t case and trans, I am hoping that gear lube is the way to go though because I think that t case makes too much noise sometimes. I need to know soon because the season of the hunt is near and the fluid needs to be done, I don't think my dad ever changed it and he has had it since 91. On a different note what suggestions are there on a complete exhaust system? I'm looking to a easy to install and quite dual system.
