Brake pedal return spring

he guys,

I just replaced my master brake cylinder and took the vacuum booster out and painted it while in the process.

I therefor had to disconnect the brake pedal from it and took a spring of. I didnt pay attention to where this spring was mounted and now cant seem to find the place to hook it up to.

Its a GMC 1974 2500 Suburban.

Anybody got a picture of how it should be mounted?

Re: Brake pedal return spring

he thanks Ray.

funny thing is that the spring is in the hydraboost diagram and not the vacuum power version, which is in my car....and I am 99% sure the spring was attached to the #1 part in the vacuum diagram in my car and not the #15 part that is in the hydra power diagram. I am pretty sure there was no #15 on my brake pedal.

hope somebody can upload a picture of their 73-74 setup? would really help.

otherwise I'll be looking into it under my dash 2nite again myself.

Re: Brake pedal return spring

Kikkegek does your 74 Suburban have Delco Moriane or Bendix brakes.

My 75 C10 has Delco Moraine vacuum booster brakes and there is no return spring under the dash.

Re: Brake pedal return spring

I think Delco, but how can I see the difference? I got the round looking master brake cylinder and not the squarish version. Does that help?

Re: Brake pedal return spring

I have only owned and worked with Delco Morane which has a thinned vacuum booster than the Bendix booster.

It might help if you posted a picture of your master and booster.

Re: Brake pedal return spring

the spring hole you are after is drilled in the steer col mounting bracket directly above the brake switch. level with where the wires come out of the connector when looking straight up from the floor.
the other end hooks just as you have it on the retaining bracket

he BNS454, already tried that.

I guess you mean the hole top left in this pic?

from that pic it seems doable to connect is over there. But look at its position from the bottom and you will notice the spring has to cross over and is not mountable between these two holes

Well unfortunately mine will not be much help. Just wondering, have you adjusted the brake switch?

Re: Brake pedal return spring

To add after staring at both yours and mine assembly is it possible it goes into this spot?

I think its a stretch but that spot would almost pull the pedal upwards (back into the switch) as you release the pedal

Re: Brake pedal return spring

he Trevor. appreciate it very much you taking this pic for me. I have tried that spot and it was allmost impossible to put the spring in there. When I finally had it in there it did do anything at all. At least not pull the pedal towards the switch.

Funny thing is your 74 setup doesnt even have the hole in the bracket that mounts against the pedal.

And if you look at the info from the service manuals, there is only a spring in the hydraboost setup, but not in the vacuumbooster setup.

I hadn't adjusted the switch recently. But I have adjusted the switch yesterday so my brake lights dont flicker anymore.

thanks everybody for helping out.

last thing I might do is drill a new hole. guess my pedal and/or bracket arent original anymore.

couple of friend here in the Netherlands also checked and nobody has a spring in their setup....guess mine is special, hahaha

Re: Brake pedal return spring

Kikkegek I wish I could have been more help but your brakes are different from my 75 C10. Your vacuum booster looks like it is a dual diaphragm booster and mine is a thin single diaphragm booster. Under the dash looks about the same as yours except my brake switch bracket does not have that hole.

I sure hope you find out where that pull springs goes.

Re: Brake pedal return spring

if you are still hunting for the spring hole ALL of your pics are taken to far towards the fire wall the hole is directly above the brake switch ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR not the push button end.
the spring stretchs alongway and is a pain to get on
my 78 and 80 also my 86 are in the same spot there is a metal plate screwed above the switch on the 80 that obscures most of the spring but the hook is still visable

Re: Brake pedal return spring

No all your photos are to far down the collom
im thinking you may not have pulled the lower collum trim panel (the squareish plate that bridges the dash) you need to see the top steering collum bolts
the hole may also be obscured by the wiring from the main wiring connector its wires run up past the hole to the indicator switch and horn
as before if you take a photo of the back of the brake switch NOT THE FRONT you will see it. in every photo you have missed it you need to look toward the steering wheel not the brake pedal
it is at least 1 inch further up than that hole and its in the channel not to the side
