Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reinforce the spare tire carrier to keep from getting stress cracks in the box? Any information would be appreciated.

Ron

The wear iron for the carrier I installed didn't fit so I made one out of angle and bolted to the cross brace

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

I have a 66 short bed that has been redone. I cannot move the spare around so I assume it's reinforced correctly. Let me know if I can describe the bracket system or better yet I will get someone to show me how I can post pictures.

C10, I thought Ron was asking about spare tire carriers under bed. My mistake. However, I'm sure there are others who will be able to use your leads. Thanks

The under bed carrier doesn't connect to the box in any way. It only connects to the frame. When you convert a standard stepside to a spare carrier fender, there are reinforcements that need made due to the weight of the carrier and tire on the bed side.

I could be mistaken, but I thought he was referring to the fender mounted spare.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

The problem I was addressing was when I took the truck apart it had stress cracks at the mounting point on the side panel. Was wondering if anyone had experienced this. Was trying to come up with a solution to keep it from happening again with the truck all done. Thanks for all the inputs though. I do love this forum.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

The carrier has several support brackets. Was your truck originally a spare fender model or was it converted? Can you post any pictures of what you have and the stress cracks?

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

I will try to get some pics of the parts as I have taken it apart. I will also get some pics of the stress cracks on the side of the panel. As I am retiring today it may be a couple days (going to have to recuperate from partying) before I post the pics. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

Hey 1963-C10 was looking at your thread about the 348. Did you get it broke loose? Is it rebuilt yet? Those along with the 409's were cool looking engines. And from what I understand were torque monsters.

No, haven't had time to get back on it yet. Got side tracked with a roof project on my barn. Will be back on it Sunday when I get back from a camping trip with some friends up in the Uhwarrie Nat'l Forrest.

I've got the conversion done on the fleetside from manual to auto, the new cab mounts came in last week for it so I can mount the cab permanently. Will be ready for an engine to drop in soon.

I'll probably have to pull the heads if I can't get it to rotate. I have gone out one a week and soaked the cylinders, so maybe she's ready to spin now and I won't have to pull the heads. I'll keep you updated.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

Looking forward to hear about it. I am posting some pics of the mount locations for the spare tire and what I was talking about with the stress cracks.

It does have the mount at the front of the panel the to the back panel. It also had two L brackets that go vertical for support as well as the rods.

Thanks for the information.

Ron

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

Can you get them any larger? I tried to copy and enlarger, but they came out blurry. There is a small mount that fits over top of the fender and under the bed rail also...and then the carrier support rod through the fender.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

I have all the rod supports but I am not familiar with a mount over the top rail. Is this something that overs over the top of the bed panel?

Thanks for your response.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

Yes that is correct. The PO had bondo'd over it on the inside. Going to weld it up and would like to know if they make something that will keep it from cracking it again that is stock? The gold color is my current driver in the back ground, which is going to be leaving this next week so I can make the 65 my daily driver.

Re: Spare tire reinforcement for step side.

My guess is it cracked due to the damage caused by the PO. If you replace the bad metal, the factory carrier brackets you have should be more than adequate to hold the weight. I've carried a 235/75R15 spare for years with no issues.
