??Oil Pressure high limit on gauge??

Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone knows exactly what the high mark on the oil pressure gauge represents in psi? I know on the 67-72,s it is 60 or 80 depending on the gauge and they are marked to identify.

Even the 50-54 gauges are marks by a number of PSi but the 64-66 gauges only have marks.

Is it 30 lbs or 60 lbs or 45 lbs??? I know what my guess is but want some input from others please.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thank you,
Tom

Can you hook up a '64-'66 gauge to air pressure on a bench along with an known accurate gauge to check it?

I may have to try that if no one can answer my question. It would be just as easy for me to use my 72 pick up (with 60 lb gauge) and connect the 64 oil pressure gauge up to my existing oil line and compare.

Thanks for the tip,
Tom

Re: ??Oil Pressure high limit on gauge??

I was always under the assumption that the (60-63 at least) gauges were 0-60 psi

Re: ??Oil Pressure high limit on gauge??

I get the impression that my stock guages give exaggerated readings which I attribute to fatigue of the mechanisims due to so many years of use. I wonder, is that possible?

Yes, that would be a good assumption due to the fact that any factory gauge is 50+ years old. They do tend to loose there ability to be accurate. Some say and believe that they were never accurate to start with. I suppose it will be one of those arguments.

My objective hear is to learn exactly what the high graduation mark on the gauge represents in PSI since it is not labeled on the gauge.

Re: ??Oil Pressure high limit on gauge??

The numbers on the lens seem to indicate that the high mark should be 60 psi.

Out of curiosity, I gathered up a few of the 64-66 clusters I have in my stash of spare parts and did some testing like VictoriaHardware described. I hooked them up to the adjustable air pressure regulator & gauge that I use for painting.

4 out of the 5 oil pressure gauges I tested seemed to be pretty accurate. They were on the middle graduation mark with 30 psi and on the high mark with 60 psi (give or take a couple psi). The oddball gauge (and worst looking of the bunch) seemed to be a little bit non-linear. That one was reading at the half way mark with only about 20 psi and was getting up close to the 3/4 mark with 30 psi. But wasn't very far above the high graduation mark at 60 psi.

Ray,

This is perfect and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your time. The question is answered. 4 out of 5 convinces me that it is a 60 psi gauge on the high mark. So did you just use compressed air with a compression fitting for the back of the gauge and regulate the air?

I don't have access to an air compressor currently so that is why I was looking for help with this.

Thank you again,
Tom

Re: ??Oil Pressure high limit on gauge??

You're welcome Tom!

Yes, I just fed regulated compressed air to the gauge being tested. And adjusted the regulator pressure while comparing the reading on the regulator's gauge to the reading on the oil gauge being tested. I used a scrap section of stock oil line (that already had the correct compression fitting for the gauge) along with some adapter fittings to join the other end to the compressed air line.
