need help decoding this engine...
So I was looking to see the engine configuration on my truck and I cant seem to find out what it is. The casting on the drivers rear is 3970010 which means it is a 68-72 motor but the engine code info on the front dosent match anything. The number stamped on the water pump boss is V111CTYY and there is a partial vin code (which dosent match the truck... not surprised) but the only thing I found that said CTY says its a 400?

You need to get the casting numbers from the right rear just in front of where the bell housing mates up. Should be a leter, 2 numbersm a space, and then another number, that will tell you the year, the single digit at the end will be either a 2 or a 0. Then you take the last 3 letters of the v0205tdj, "tdj" and plug it in to the chevy mania decoder. It says it is either a 1972 350 or a 1980 350. V=Flint, MI factory, 0205 is the month and day it was produced, and tdj means a 350

Re: need help decoding this engine...
I've got a 26-3970010 which comes to 350 1969-79 but
either V0614TR which is a 78 LeMans 305 or V0614TRJ 72 C30 Truck 350 with a TH400. or V0614TRC 73 4x4 350 I can't find the date code and don't necessarily want to remove my valve covers. I also have a long water pump with the alternator on the passenger side and compressor on the drivers side with a vintage air replacement of the factory AC. I know I have a TH350 from replacing seals and a long water pump I can fit my fingers in between. Hope this is a TRJ or TRC replacement. There may be a worn off last digit after the TR... Re: need help decoding this engine...
TDJ = 1972 175 hp 350 with a 4bbl. Or 1980 155hp 350 with a 4bbl... Lots and lots of those made... I have the same code on my '72 GMC's 350

Re: need help decoding this engine...
Really trying to find the year. Getting confused
From Z28 "Casting Date Small block casting date is located on driver side (???) rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails. Casting Date Example: E038 - (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)). Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec" or from Mortec: http://www.mortec.com/images/diagram1.gif "Casting number and casting date locations The diagram above shows where each of the casting identifiers is located on the engine. (1) shows the location of the HEAD CASTING NUMBERS and the HEAD CASTING DATE located under the valve covers, in the rocker arm valley. (2) shows the position of the BLOCK CASTING DATE on the rear ledge of the block near the bell housing mounting surface. If you have an early big block or a late model smallblock, the BLOCK CASTING DATE may be on the passenger side of the engine block, (see 2A), instead of the rear ledge of the block. Some smallblock blocks may also have the BLOCK CASTING DATE on the driver's side of the block. "
