What is this?
Can anyone tell me what this is? It looks like it came apart and it's pretty loose. The circle part at the top below that coupler is freely spinning. Also, how do I take that off? I'm hoping that doesn't involve taking the whole column out or the steering box....

Looks like you are missing the spring and your lower steering shaft bearing fell out. Read through this thread and see if it helps.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=471499 LockDoc

Re: What is this?
Ohhh okay. Is it bad if I drive it like this for a bit until I have time to fix it?

It's OK to take a chance with it as long as you are the only one that pays if that steering linkage fails when you're driving. The problem is, while you may not have a passenger there are others on the road with you and if you lose steering you WILL hit something. |

Re: What is this?
The bottom collum bearing has failed. Ive seen steering shafts worn pretty bad from being driven with that bearing gone. And it also sometime has to do with the rubber cab mounts. sometimes the cab settles and puts the shaft in a bind andthe pressure is simply too much for that little bearing to handle.I would fix it pronto.

looks like bottom column bearing. That thing free spinning is the bearing race. I wouldn't drive it. My cousin tried to drive his lifted 75 c10 like that and tore the leather damper thing where the shaft couples to the steering box and put it in a ditch. Steering components are no joke.

Re: What is this?
Wes at classicheartbeat has lower column bearings. Might not hurt to check the upper also.
