350 fan shroud questions.
So some of you may have already read my previous post about my truck overheating during engine break in. I've got that issue taken care of. What I need is a fan shroud to keep her cool when going down the road. One member posted that he would give me a sock shroud. The question I have is my motor sits lower then sock so my fan sits lower then normal. My blades sit about 4" below the radiator. Will this cause issues with a sock fan shroud, if so what do I do and what are you running for fan shrouds? Pics please. Thank you as always.

You may want to consider going with an electric fan setup. There is a thread on here somewhere on using a Lincoln Mark VIII setup which is apparently in prettty plentiful supply in the boneyards. As far as using a stock shroud, younwould have to trim back the neck of the shroud as the fan blade does extend into the opening, I am not sure if you will get the cooling performance you will need, I suspect not especially considering the additional horsepower with new engine.

I have been searching for the lincoln mark VII fan thread, and found this jeep fan thread in the process. The thread goes back a few years, but I like the way this fan can be fastened to a stock shroud. The mark 8 fan is mentioned in this thread numerous times, some searcing on our form should yield more threads on the subject. I had been planning to run with the stock set up with a clutch fan, but this jeep unit is something I will be doing some research on.

Aside from the lack of a shroud your fan is quite far from the radiator. Adding a spacer between the pulley and fan to move the fan closer would help. Hayden makes a 2-3/4" spacer sold at any auto parts store but there may be ones that are longer.

I have experienced issues when trying to run a small block with the long water pump and a stock fan shroud. I know many others have run the long water pumps with a stock shroud. I believe that the diameter of the fan will play a big part in the fitment, but the fan will still be too far into a stock shroud for proper cooling efficiency. This is the biggest reason, I always run a short water pump as these trucks originally came with. If you have the time and patience as well as the skills, you can make a custom fiberglass shroud yourself, in a weekend.

Another option for you, Summit has MANY different sizes of aluminum shroud kits that you can make work for you. I used one, it really wasn't very difficult at all to get it right. Take some measurments and order the right size, about $60.

As CRGRS 66 stated an electric fan setup would work very well. I'm cheap and didn't want to buy a reproduction fan shroud so I bought a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan from the local Pick N Pull on 1/2 day $25.00 if I remember correctly. I had to notch the Mark VIII shroud slightly to clear the top and bottom radiator tanks and to clear my radiator hoses but it's a darn good fit for our radiators. I did have to make a bracket to mount the radiator to. I folded up some stainless steel with stainless steel standoffs BUT it could be made with some 1/16" X 2" angle and some 3/8" PVC pipe for the standoffs. Hope these pics help.

Ok so when my wife gets off work today in going to the local junk yard looking for a fan off a mark 8 or a Taurus. What wiring do you gentlemen recommend I pull with it. I'm good at following directions when it comes to electrical but not good and figuring stuff out on my own.

X2 on Lincoln electric fan. I'm running a 2 speed Mercury Cougar XR7 fan which is very similar in front of my 383/700r4. Summers here get above 100 degrees but the fan set up does a phenominal job of cooling. Really pleased with it.

j.rigby15r, yes remove your clutch fan assembly I used a Derale fan controller to control the fan - I used it to make & break the ground to my fan relay. Here's the link to the controller http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-16730 I used a Volvo fan relay but a Bosch style relay will work too.

If you go the Mark VIII route be sure to thoroughly test it before going through the work of modifying the shroud. I've known several who had these burn out or seize within days of installation. You don't want the brushes or bearing to fail while on a long trip. Avoid fans from service vehicles that have longer run hours (cabs, limos, police) since those will be more likely to be at the end of life. Also a high amp alternator is a must for a Mark VIII fan since I've been told the high side has a start spike >100A. A relay is a must to prevent frying anything.

So the fan I'm looking to buy is a two speed fan. Do I need different relays or how do I work that issue. What I would like is it be automatic between low and high, but also manual if I want to switch to high. How do I do that?

I've read about the high volt spike but a factory guy I talked to said that 40 is the most you should see upon start up.

Just an FYI, it may apply to you, it may not. I bought the whole Mark VIII fan from RockAuto.com and the electrical setup from Hollister Road Company. I really wanted to use it in my 66 C20 with a 454. The 454 had a serpentine setup from a 5.7L on it which necessitated using a long water pump. I did not have enough room to make this work. I tried for hours to come up with a solution, trimmed it here and there, made adapters, it just was not going to fit. Ended up with a new heavy duty clutch fan and normal fan, along with the shroud from Summit that I linked earlier, and even in Texas 100 degree days, it never went much above 200 degrees. YMMV, just thought I would share. Look at the measurements an be sure you have enough room before heading down this path. Even with trimming, you can only gain maybe 3/4 inch of clearance. And if you do pursue this, for a few bucks extra, just buy a new fan at RockAuto.com. It was like $80 compared to $30 at a junkyard.

Earl84 thanks for the insight. I was on rock auto last night and they were selling those fans for like $70 were my local junk yard wanted $60 as well as most ebay are more. So to me it might be worth it to buy new and get piece of mind. What did you do with your fan and parts?

Fan basically got destroyed by the end of my experimenting, I got really really radical in frustration, ended up tossing it. Still have the electrical stuff sitting in a box in the garage. IIRC, I bought the basic kit plus the dual temp 185/200 switch with AC. Interested in buying it? I'd have to look to make sure what I have before giving you a price plus shipping, but if it will work for you (please check your clearances first) I might as well pass it on to someone who can use it. I'll make you a good deal, especially since you live at Fort Riley and are probably an Army guy. I am retired Army myself, and was stationed at Fort Riley from 97 - 2000 in the Medevac unit down at the airfield, which is where you probably work based on your user name, 15R.
