64 c10 need to pass emission
I have 64 c10 with four barrel carb on a 350. My truck is overseas and even our classics have to pass emissions. The problem HC limit is 1200 ppm but mines read 5700ppm. Now there are no obvious problems, engine runs good. When I bought the truck I always noticed strong fumes coming from exhaust but you know older babies do that sometimes. The carb, intake manifold, and related gaskets are new. Any ideas where I can start to check?
Also another issue the truck has the halogen light for the headlight and no high beams. The blinkers work fine but the left blinker it is much dimmer than the right blinker and when I turn on parking lights they do not come on, any ideas how to get brighter blinker( I changed the bulb already) and get the parking lights to come on? |

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
Parking lights are not designed to come on with the headlights. To do so you have to connect the purple wire and I can't remember the other color at the switch. Check a wiring diagram, or someone here can remember which one. To get the emissions down would probably require a smog pump. Could just need the carb adjusted. There are so many smog devices missing from that truck that are on newer cars and trucks. Smog pumps didn't appear on trucks untill 1966. Engine timing can do it also. I could probably keep going but I will stop now. Maybe if you find a shop that will dial it in for you or if they even can. Good Luck.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
edit: I see Chevy Fleetside has given this idea first.
obtain and install a "smog pump", they are common on 70's and early 80's vehicles. They pump air into the exhaust manifold and, while there is a tiny little extra burning of hydrocarbons with the extra air, the main benefit is that it changes the ratio of HC to O2 by increasing the O2, usually to an allowable limit. alternatively, you could install a catalytic converter in the exhaust and actually burn up the hydrocarbons.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
There is a bit of important information missing to give more than just general ideas. What carb is on your engine? What ignition? Where is the timing set at? When was a tune up last done? Is the engine stock? Are you certain it is a 350?

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
See how they chime in... You could probably write a 2 page post on this stuff. I had a smog license back in the mid 80's. I really don't remember much of the 80's though.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
I have a demon carb, timing is good but I have not adjusted the idle mixture screws, I was thinking to do that to see if it will reduce the fumes and then go take it back for another test. Also it takes a good wild to warm up don't know if thats related or not.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
I believe a Demon Carb is a performance carb. Not really an emission carb.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
It probably has a performance cam shaft in it also. But I wouldn't know since I didn't build it.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
Install a smaller carb designed for better economy. Cut the last 3 feet of exhaust off and weld up a cat converter and a cherry bomb with a bolt on turn down. Drill a hole vertically through the pipe just behind the glass pack. Test fit a body washer and drop a nail through the hole to hold the washer. Stuff the glass pack with 2 bags of steel wool and install the washer, nail and the turn down a block away from the inspection station. Idle in and pass inspection. Remove the temporary exhaust and bolt the demon back on.
Dont ask how I know this works.

I would think some cats would help burn off the bad stuff.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
Thanks for all the advice, got the lights working, found wiring schematics , purple wire was cut, wires criss crossed and ground problem. that socket holder didn't want to ground when popped in. Now I'm about to play with the carb.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
There is always the rubbing alcohol in the gas tank trick. A buddy used to get a mid 80s firebird to pass with no cats in CA...

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
jolobo, google Georgia's Clean Air Force for all the info on what needs and what doesn't need emissions. I think your in the clear unless you just want a cleaner running truck.

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission (pics + oil leak)
I have an oil leak from the front, see pics. I notice there is a hole (q-tip) opposite the water hose. The oil seems to be coming out of that threaded hole and hitting the water hose and running down. What is that hole for and should there be a screw with some type of o ring or washer to close it up?

Re: 64 c10 need to pass emission
A short bolt is all you need with a washer on it. The hole is to put a longer bolt in to hold the fuel pump shaft when changing the pump. Don't use a bolt longer than about 1/2" long. It's 3/8 16.
