63 c10 starting issue
I just bought a 1963 Chevy lwb c10 with a 250 straight 6 was sitting over 27 years at a house in Dallas tx, I have replaced the spark plugs,Coil, voltage regulator, battery have timed it 3-5 times new carb I have pulled the intake/exhaust manifold check for debre engine is turning over just fine I have good compression but still will not start any advice on this matter would be a great help thanks

Yes it's gett fuel plugs are wet with gas and the carb is blowing fire balls

I've read Little bit about timing from top dead center on number six cylinder is there any truth to that

Your timing is WAY off. Does your motor have timing marks?

Sounds to me like your timing is really retarded. Try advancing it and see if that helps. I may be wrong, but I though you always timed a motor off of #1 cylinder.

And that's what I've always done bring up to #1 tds and stab the distributor with rotor button toward #1 but I've been reading and was even told by a old timer that this engine was timed sometimes off #6 I've tried it both ways it seems to spit more off of # 1

I guess its possible, Im sure someone else will chime in. Either way, try advancing it and see if it get better. Also, are you running an electric fuel pump? if you are do you have a regulator on it?

If you have no timing marks how do you know you are at TDC? Are you looking at the pistion? When you bring the piston up are you on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke?

without the timing marks to go off of, you have a 50/50 chance of being on the exhaust stroke. Only way to tell that i know of is to take off the valve cover and match the intake valve opening to the piston coming up. That will give you tdc. It sounds to me like you are 180deg

Or you can put your finger over the spark plug hole and feel for compression.......

But then you get your finger tip all dirty, LOL. Im just used to working by myself i guess turning the key with my finger over the hole is a little trickier than it sounds. I can see the valves moving.

Quick Tip? Put your finger over the hole, turn the crank with a 1/2 ratchet? Or if you need to, plug the hole lightly with a wine cork, then use socket and ratchet to turn the crank bolt over

Yes I pulled the valve cove off and watched the lifters and had the spark plug out also I'm 98% positive I was at tdc

What I am trying to say is that if your positive that #1 is at TDC, rotor button should be at one of the distributor locations where a plug wire attaches, much like the photo earlier. #1 cylinder should come off of that spot, then #3 to #3 cylinder, #5 to #5 cylinder and so on. The wires do not go to #1 cyl, #2 cyl, #3 cyl, etc.............. in a clock wise fashion
