1961 GMC Pickup,buying advice needed

Recently found a 61 GMC pickup , V6 3 on the tree. originally from north Dakota. Looks to be fairly untouched ,original paint, solid frame and floor , cab corners good, motor sounds good. Truck needs windshield ,carb , possible gas tank, rear bumper. Im sure other stuff, hes asking $4500. Is this a decent price ? Any advice appreciated.

I saw that truck on kijiji a while ago. It appears to be a decent truck. Is the price right? I cant say. It has been for sale at the price for several months.
Check Bill's Truck Shop to see if he has any comparable trucks for sale to get a gauge on pricing.
Greg.

Here in oregon the price would be high. What would your plans be with it? Modify it or drive as is. Yes you can swap later model suspension and motor in it. I do like the original look and the stainless trim pieces with good patina.

It is worth what you are willing to pay. I paid a little more for mine and was seriously misled by the seller. I have learned quite a bit since. It has the original big block V6 and 4 speed auto. Leaks like a pig.
From looking at your photos I think it is not out of line if it's in your budget. It is a deluxe too, back cab trim. That alone I hear is worth over a grand if you can find someone that wants it.

My plan would be to drive as is for the time being, i have another project on the go. My main concern is that i was not able to take it for a test drive at all., but i was very impressed with the floor area and frame , very solid and clean . Im planning to go have a more detailed look this weekend.

I think it's pretty amazing that the original hubcaps are all still there, let alone the side trim!

Re: 1961 GMC Pickup, buying advice needed

It seems to be in generally good condition. The price seems high to me, but I don't know what trucks in similar condition go for in Canada. That might be reasonable if they are extremely hard to find in decent condition. I'd be most concerned about the roof area above the windshield and how far the lower front fender rust extends. Make sure the lower kick panel area inside the cab is in good shape.

If it originally came from North Dakota, I'd be amazed if it truly isn't riddled with cancer. I've seen much newer vehicles from there that were missing large enough sections of the lower body work, to allow viewing the opposite side of the street by looking through the rusted out area of the car. Perhaps it didn't see much winter driving. Personally I would spend a lot of time under it making sure it's as good as it looks so there isn't any disappointment later.

If all seems okay, then it's a matter of how much it's worth to you. Getting something in good shape to begin with, can avoid hours and money in rust repair and add smiles in going straight to having fun.

Re: 1961 GMC Pickup, buying advice needed

If your a purist, you really can't ask for anything more than a clean original survivor, and that's exactly what this truck is. Looks like some buffing will bring back the luster of that factory baked on finish. Production numbers were pretty low in '61, so finding another '61 GMC in similar condition to compare prices is not an easy task. I look at this truck ( especially this nice green and white tu tone custom cab ) a think what a shame it is these trucks are rarely ever seen restored to showroom condition. I personally have never seen a combo like this ever come up for sale locally in the last 30 years. This truck has almost nothing in common with the much more popular '64-'66 Chevy pickups, so keep that in mind if you plan to alter into a street rod. But, if you want to break from the crowd and be different, here is your chance. Putting a dollar value on a vehicle is difficult, but try to factor in the cost of work it does not need when making a decision.

Re: 1961 GMC Pickup, buying advice needed

I'm going to go have thorough look at today with camcorder in hand. Its almost impossible to find a truck in this condition in this area. Usually the good ones are either from western Canada or the US, and the cost of transport is usually factored in the price.I should have more pics later on.
