Need 5.3 Coils, Harness, and Computer. Best options please...

Hi, I purchased a 1999 5.3 from a 1500 pick up. It was pulled and replaced by a crate motor. The guy said everything was there except all of the electronics: No coil packs, wiring harness, or computer. I'm new to the Vortec world but knew i wanted to go this direction when I got my truck. Now I have my truck and need to track down the engine parts needed to get this bad boy up and running. I checked out another thread that said PSI had a lot of the parts. They seem to have most things, but not the coil packs. I guess I'm trying to find out if there is a one stop shop for Vortec parts? I've looked at Summit and they have the coils but I'm looking for someplace that specializes in these Vortec motors who can get me lined out with all the parts needed. I've been searching ebay, c-list, and this site, but have been unable to find these parts. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We can supply you with everything you need. Are you looking for new coils or used ones?

Thanks for the quick reply Bill. I guess it would depend on price and longevity of the parts. Let me know what you think. This will be my first Vortec build and I'm looking for some input on issues like this. Thanks. If you have a website to look at what you have to offer, let me know. Thanks again.

GM coils very rarely fail. If I were you I would just find a good looking set of coils and rock them.

Our online store is below. There are somethings we offer that arent listed there. Still getting the site built up.

I picked up the engine for $250 a few years ago. I believe I need: coil packs and brackets, engine and transmission harness, computer, throttle body, mass air sensor, and pedal assembly. I'm trying to figure out if it is worth it to purchase all these items or sell what I have and buy another complete motor. Thanks for the input.

I'd go to the pull a part or similar and see if I could buy all these items from the same wreck or blown engine truck. It is possible to piece these items together; but your success chances are much better with all from the same if this is your first LS rodeo.

If you can grab up a Drive By Cable Throttle Body, and the coils from local yard we have everything else IN STOCK. Including the stand alone harness. This is what our Gen III Engine Management Package consists of-

Stand Alone Engine Harness
Re manufactured, Stand Alone Flashed PCM
Two new O2 Sensors with Weld In Bungs
Brand New Delphi Mass Air with Adapter Sleeves to make it an even 4"
Flat Mounting PCM Bracket

All this is priced at $950 if you are getting the base series harness. If you upgrade the harness the price will change a little.

If you decide to go Drive by Wire the price will increase by $50.

You can get the harness and everything from the scrap yard, but then you have to rewire it or someone else has to rewire it for you.

If you decide to rewire it, we also offer a DIY kit. We get a LOT of positive feedback from guys who have built their own harnesses, and done several harnesses. They say it makes it a heck of a lot easier to rewire the harness.

I am waiting on a price for new coils from my supplier. Sometimes the wheels turn slowly.

Re: Need 5.3 Coils, Harness, and Computer. Best options please...

Thank you for all the replies. I have been checking our local Pick n pull for anything with the right motor to scavenge from but it seems that they don't make it out to the public area. Every time I check they are gone.
Bill your option sounds good, but I will need to save up some extra project funds. My truck has a running 350 /Th400/ 12 bolt posi set up now, but the Vortec is in my plans for the future. I'm looking to make this a daily driver and want reliability, decent power, and mileage. I'm going to tare the 5.3 down in the meantime and get it rebuilt. Hopefully the funds will be available by the time I am done to purchase the rest from you. The DIY kit sounds appealing. I'll have to check what the money savings would be and weather or not I can find a used set up.

Be cautious when sourcing parts from a bone yard. If you don't get the correct components that match your YOM engine you could find yourself in a world of trouble from a compatibility standpoint. If this is your first LSx project you might want to give serious consideration to a package from a specialist. A little higher cost now may save you some big headaches down the road.

Re: Need 5.3 Coils, Harness, and Computer. Best options please...

Thanks for the advice. Is it exactly year specific or did things match up for a few years then change, or is it unknown? It is looking more and more like I have two options: purchase a set up from a vendor that all works together or sell what I have, buy another 5.3 that is complete and then get one of the wiring harness adapter kits. I'm thinking the most affordable way would be to buy the complete engine, but this time get everything needed. Thanks again for the information.

Re: Need 5.3 Coils, Harness, and Computer. Best options please...

The vast majority of mis-match parts problems you hear about are for the Drive By Wire applications. If you are going DBW, then your throttle body, TAC module, gas pedal and PCM need to match. There are several years of each that can be mixed, but if you don't know exactly what you are looking at, just taking a sellers word or the year written on the truck at the Pick N Pull can be problematic. As a general rule, on the truck engines, 2000-2002 DBW parts are the same, 2003-2005 parts will interchange and 2006-2007 Classic body style parts will also interchange. Now there are some parts that will interchange between more years, but this is where it gets complicated. See what I'm getting at? This is what people are talking about. If you are going DBC, then it's much easier because 99-02 trucks are easy to find and all parts will interchange. If all you have is a long block, I would try to find a complete pull out, since buying all the pieces will likely cost you more in the long run if this is your first rodeo. I've pieced them together on the cheap, but I've been doing this for 15 years, and have a pretty sizeable stash of junk lying around. LOL.
