Re: 1966 GMC with a Salvage Title??

Not sure about Virginia, but here in Arizona it means it was wrecked, stolen and stripped or in a flood. It was more expensive for the insurance company to fix than what the vehicle was worth so they deemed it totaled and paid off the owner. The owner then bought it back for a low amount of money from the insurance company and fixed it themselves. It then gets issued a salvaged title. Beware it is not worth much having a salvaged title. Very hard to sell here in Arizona with one, especially if it is a classic car or truck.

Re: 1966 GMC with a Salvage Title??

Here are the rules in VA. I was looking at the same truck. Where you may have trouble is the salvage cirtificate needs to be in your name.
Jimmy
To schedule a repaired or rebuilt vehicle examination, submit the following documents and fees:

Original Virginia Salvage Certificate in your name
Original Request for Examination of Repaired or Rebuilt Salvage Vehicle (LES 022A)
$125.00 Examination fee
$10.00 Substitute title fee

The above documents and fees must be mailed to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Vehicle Branding Work Center
P.O. Box 27412
Richmond, Virginia 23269-0001

A DMV Special Agent will contact you to schedule an appointment to examine your repaired or rebuilt salvage vehicle. Once the salvage vehicle has passed the examination, the DMV Special Agent will give you the new certificate of title with the appropriate brand.

If you plan to apply for a vehicle registration, please allow 24 hours from the receipt of your certificate of title for the vehicle record to be updated before visiting a DMV Customer Service Center or DMV Select office.

I would have thought that it having a "salvaged title" meant that all that paperwork and inspections would have already been done. I guess it would depend on if it's currently registered and operable VS something that hasn't been registered or has maybe even non-oped.

Yes, been done to classify the car/truck as "salvaged", but the above steps are taken when/if the owner wants to have the salvage designation removed. If the salvaged vehicle has been sold to a second person then it was likely (and perhaps legally) being sold as a parts car/truck and never intended to be put back on the road.

Re: 1966 GMC with a Salvage Title??

The guy who had it was rebuilding it. Not sure if the salvage was in his name or not. You are correct on getting the salvage off and back to a usable title most the time it needs to be the one the certificate was issued to. There are ways to get it straight.
Salvage vehicles may not be operated on Virginia highways and may not be registered as long as there is an active salvage certificate. However, if the vehicle is rebuilt, a salvage certificate may be reassigned to a licensed rebuilder.
Once the vehicle has been repaired or rebuilt then the title can get branded.
Salvage vehicles with an estimated cost of repair of 75 percent or less of actual cash value will receive a certificate of title branded as "REPAIRED". Salvage vehicles with an estimated cost of repair more than 75 percent, but not exceeding 90 percent of actual cash value will receive a certificate of title branded as "REBUILT". The "REPAIRED" or "REBUILT" brand is permanent and will be carried forward to each title issued for the life of the vehicle.
Selling a Repaired or Rebuilt Vehicle

In the future, if you choose to sell the vehicle, you must provide the new purchaser with your certificate of title signed over to the purchaser and a "Rebuilt Vehicle Disclosure Statement" (VSA 59).
So it is not a lost cause but can be a lot of work. Working with a licenced rebuilder that knows the system helps. The first stop is DMV and talk to a DMV investigator on how to proceed.

That makes a lot of sense so I doubt that's the way it's done here in California.

Re: 1966 GMC with a Salvage Title??

I was going to go look at it if yall did not buy it. I knew the title could be a problem but was looking for a parts truck so that was not going to be an issue for me. If you decide not to keep it let me know. Still need a parts truck.
