How to extend inside door handle shaft/sprig?

So I thought I was being clever with my custom door panels, and they turned out nice. BUT, they are thicker than the stock cardboard. Close to 1/2 inch thick. Problem is there isn't enough shaft poking through for the door handle to grab on to. I need a good 3/8 to 1/2 inch. It looks like I need another head welded onto the existing one. That doesn't even look possible. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm kinda at a loss here.

Thanks

Brandon from MN

Oh, and BTW, I've thought about "poppers" but I really like handles. That would be worst case scenario for me.

Re: How to extend inside door handle shaft/sprig?

I have never searched for them, but would think someone along the way thought to make extender with female spline and set screw on one end and spline for handle on the other. I know they make them for shower handles when you add tile....

Would affect window cranks too... unless you went electric

You might be able to remove the internal release mech, cut and weld (perhaps even solder) the shaft back using a collar to extend and align it. Just a thought...

I thought that at one time someone sold extensions that would fit them but I don't know how far they would reach, I think they were for Vans back in the custom van days. Some might fit older pickup shafts though.
