Question Name that tranny time

What is it? It came hooked to my 283...
Looks like the numbers on the trani reads 3925660
and the numbers on the bell housing reads 3899621
must not be a truck......its missing some linkage too!

I guess it could be a M21 but the drain plug on the side indicates it is probably an M22. The numbers show this a 69 or 70 year but they didn't put drain plugs on the M20 Or M21's until 71.
The M22's always had them so, at any rate, I have close ratio gearing but I will have to open her up to verify by the number of teeth, yes, I said HER, so Stuart or Bob wouldn't fit too well.
It has a Hurst Competition Plus shifter there as well.
Cool, the guy sold me an engine for less than
the value of the transmission and shifter he just threw in...

That's a fill plug on the side. The drain plug on a m22 goes on that boss down at the bottom front. Yours isn't tapped and plugged.
You could call her Pat!!
Works for both genders!!

Well Pat is an m21 I guess...I got the engine from a hot rod guy who said it was built so I don't think he would hook up an M20 to it...gotta look to be sure.

Thanks Jon, good info to know...I looked that bell housing up and all I could figure, that it was dancing around the right models of cars,
Chevelles, Camaros, and Corvettes but couldn't pin it down.
HMMM! another project...

Re: Name that tranny time

That exact bell housing number started in 1967 and was used for many years . It's one of the more popular bells for all muscle cars

Re: Name that tranny time

Yes, that started in 1965 through 1969 for sure , after that Im not sure when it changed. All my Impalas had the speedo cable come across the firewall to the passenger side down to a clip welded to the floor to hold the cable, then into the RH side of the 4 speed . Automatics were on the drivers side.
