How to read oil dipstick of a 4l60e ????

Hy all...

after some testrides...i have a slipping transmission.

So therefore i checked the oil stand....after warming up the transmission, i finally checked the stand in "parking position" + idling.

I couldnt recognize any oil on the dipstick....so i added around 1 litre of Dexron III

Than i made the next test run....the slipping was almost gone...so i am pretty sure i dont have the right oil stand...

I already added 1 litre so i am a bit doubtful to add some more...because i am not really able to read the oil dipstick....

After i added 1 litre the oil dipstick shows this result (as u can see on the pic)..

The oil film on the dipstick is really tapered......i have marked this on the pic with the black line...

So what do u think about the oil stand......is the stand just at the end of the tapered oil film ????

SORRY its quite hard for me to describe it in english

Thanks for ur help

regards from Germany

Not sure why it would be angled like that, but probably just still low. When the trans is fully warm the level should be between the two holes.

The angle is pretty weird.
Did you buy the dipstick from the aftermarket, or was the how it came on your trans?

There have been a few different ones made, to fit different models. Not every dipstick tube is the same length.

The lowest dry point on the dipstick is the level, Your still low on fluid!

Re: How to read oil dipstick of a 4l60e ????

Hy all

the dipstick is original from a Camaro Z28.

I did the swap by my own , so i know everything is original. Maybe its a bit confusing ...on the pic u see the dipstick from the backside.

All the other marks are on the other side..

@Clinebarger
I had the same thoughts than you... i made some more notes on the pic.
I guess the angled oil film comes from pushing / pulling into the tube.

Just to get a rough orientation, what do u think i need to add to get the right oil level ???

For sure , i will add more oil step by step ...i heard the transmission is quite sensitive at this point

Thanks a lot

Re: How to read oil dipstick of a 4l60e ????

one more question ?? :-)

The transmission has around 60.ooo miles on it, do u recommend to add some stuff like "lubeguard" e.g. ??

When i bought the camaro i made some extensive test runs...the transmission worked fine at this time..

The current slipping in my Chevy Pickup , occurs by the low fluid level (hopefully )

Thx

AC , Add a pint at a time until you get to the bottom hole . Just leave it in park . This would be the cold fill . Once warmed up the fluid line will move up to the top hole .Do not drive it any more until you get the fluid to this point . You can hurt the trans driving it with that low of fluid . Once you start driving it get the trans at full temperature and check again and add if needed .

Also never add any additives to a trans . Just use the proper fluid . If you need to have a additive its time for a rebuild .
