Why is this 53 GMC 5 window pickup going so cheap?
Am I missing something obvious? I'm new to the world of old cars/trucks, but fast becoming a lover. I'm confused why this 1953 is so cheap right now ($5200 with 12 min left in ebay auction).
is it really not worth much? Looks great to me... http://www.ebay.com/itm/301608711531...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |

The paint job would cost that much. I am always wondering what kind of poor repairs are under the paint. Underneath looks pretty rough, making potential buyers probably wonder same thing I just mentioned, what is under the shiny paint? And, generally long beds are not as desirable as a short bed.
Yeah, my better half has pulled the reins in on me many times! |

the bed floor looks to be a solid piece of pine, that probably cost a pretty penny.

That was a flat out steal, for another $10K to pay someone do the frame and other finish-up stuff you'd double your investment.

To me the paint looked a little thin and orange peeled in places, buy maybe it was the light?? I hope it wasn't a newspaper and bondo body job, the condition of the rest of the frame and back side of body panels make me suspious. But then a couple more cans of chassis black and undercoated could hide that too.

Re: Why is this 53 GMC 5 window pickup going so cheap?
I think it was "gas Monkey'd". Absolutely nothing done that wasn't needed to make it run except paint. Paint/bodywork looked suspicious to me also. Who knows how it actually drives down the road with brakes, steering linkage, kingpins, etc. it has or how long the engine will last with the gunk cleaned out of the oil pan, shims taken out of the rod bearings and the cooling system full of KW metallic block sealer to plug all the cracks in the head.

Might of had something to do with the reproduction serial number plate sandblasted to look old, and the harbor freight pop rivets holding it on.

Re: Why is this 53 GMC 5 window pickup going so cheap?
I think that everyone is on the same page on this one. Quick and maybe suspect paint job done in hope the "rubes with money" spend freely and pay several times what they have in it for the truck that appears to have had a spray can rebuild on the engine and no work on the chassis except what had to be done mechanically to make it drivable.
The terrible looking painted because they were real rusty hubcaps probably cost the seller 5K worth of bids. Personally I think it may have brought more if they had left the tired old paint on it and scrubbed it really good top and bottom. Then guys would have been fighting over a truck that either had "great patina" or what looked like a really solid project prospect. Looking it over again the bed floor is a sheet of plywood. Dealer probably bought it from someone or took it in trade is my guess.

Re: Why is this 53 GMC 5 window pickup going so cheap?
The place that sold this is about 20 minutes from me. I did not see this one but most of the cars they sell are 20 footers. In this area that was a deal. Most likely that paint job is hiding some bad stuff. If they couldn't sell it locally for close to that price then that say's something was noticeably wrong.
