Burnin smell after hard acceleration !! ?? LS1 / 4l60e

Hy all

after another testdrive today :-) i had some burning smell after i one / two hard acceleration ...

It smelled like a burned clutch....

Is it possible to get that smell from the transmission ??

If yes what do u think about that ? whats the problem ?

Thanks again

If your still having the same low-fluid problem you had in your earlier thread, then its quite possible the transmission made that smell. Its usually the smell of burning trans fluid and/or burnt friction material.

Take a look at your trans fluid, and smell it. You'll smell the burning on the fluid and it'll be much darker, or black.

What do you see?

Achim - do you have a lot of brake dust anywhere? If your dragging a brake caliper, you might be smelling the brake pads.

If the fluid is red and doesn't smell, then it probably didn't burn...usually its pretty easy to see right away.

Brake pads can make a burning smell, dragging brake drums can do the same.

All those things will have a smell of burning metal/carbon (like it smells when you use a grinder).

Like B city says check for brake drag. I've had it happen to me before. Jack it up and see if all the tires will rotate fairly easy, my problem turned out to be the caliper was seized to the caliper mount so that the caliper wouldnt float. This caused the brake pad to drag on the rotor.Took it off and cleaned it up real good and put some copper antiseize just on the slide..problem fixed..

If your brakes turn out to be ok , Then if this is your first hard acceleration it could be thing burning off the exhaust system . If its new there is oils that will burn off and out of the mufflers . Also when handling it you will get things on it as well . The exhaust will get hotter towards the rear under wide open throttle . This is just a thought if you seem not to find whats wrong .

Hy all

after some more testrides ...... i couldnt smell anything so far.

So far so good....i will keep an eye on it.

The fluid of the trans looks still like new and it is on the right level :-)

pls let me know which gears are the strongest of the 4l60e.

Does it make sense if you do a short / hard acceleration or burn-outs just to use the 1/2 gear ???

i heard that the 4th gear is a weak point of the 4l60e !!

Thanks
Achim
