just milled my 292 cylinder head
Hey everyone just thought I would share. I brought my 292 straight 6 head into work today to just put in the parts washer. Well, as a machinist with my own shop I couldn't resist. I first checked the head for squareness and found it was about .004 out. So, I decided to mill the head down until it cleaned up which was about .005 depth and then I couldn't resist and took it down another .025 for a total of .030. Should give me a small bump in compression and give me a nice flat surface for my previously leaking head gasket. For anyone interested this was done with a 12 flute face mill. Cat 40 taper. On a sharp bed mill with power feed. 390 rpm and about 7 inches per min feed. .005 finish pass. Ill find out how it works in a few weeks...

Yeah - those inline heads like to warp a wee bit. I keep looking at those LPG pistons to bump the compression up a little too.

Re: just milled my 292 cylinder head
You think with 2 passes she's guna stay flat? The shop I work in we face one of our products we make with an 8 flute facing bit and always end with a small step where the two a passes meet.

Re: just milled my 292 cylinder head
No one said I did two passes. For your information I did 5 total passes. Last one was .005

And afterwards I indicated the head from end to end, stylus did not move. Put on the granite square and also used a straight edge and its dead nuts now

Re: just milled my 292 cylinder head
Shaky I did a cleanup on manifold face as well. Also put on a fresh coat of paint. Ready to get this thing installed and see how it runs

Re: just milled my 292 cylinder head
Looks nice! Outta seal up well now. With the head shaved that much you should see about 8.5.1....maybe a little less. But you should feel a wee bit a difference anyhow. lol Have fun with it man. Heck since your a machinist you should put in bigger valves and lump ports.

Re: just milled my 292 cylinder head
Looks good. Don't forget new freeze plugs while you are at it. If I had a dollar for every one of these I have milled. Use to hate when customers brought in the integral heads. Don't see them much anymore which is fine by me.
