help identifying this carburetor?

Hey guys I've been searching but can't find the exact model Rochester carb I have. Also if you guys have a link to setting the float for whatever model it is I would really appreciate it! Thanks

You'll find a series of numbers on the side of the carb and also on the base plate. Look for a series of numbers starting with #700________

The Rochester Model B carburetor was used primarily on 4 and 6 cylinder General Motors products from 1950 to 1967. It was also sold as a service replacement for the 1932 and up Carter or Stromberg carburetors on Chevrolet engines.

The first design used a leather accelerator pump with a slotted stem (CK10 services these). These were used on Chevrolet cars up to 1956 and trucks to 1962.

The second design, from 1957 onwards in cars and 1963-up in trucks uses a round stem pump with a rubber cup.

Depending on the type of choke employed, the carbs were designated B, BC or BV. The plain model B was the manual choke version. BC carbs used a choke thermostat mounted on the side of the carburetor - attached to the air horn (top third). BV carburetors used a crossover choke where the choke coil is mounted on the manifold in a heat stove.

Also when I flipped the lower bowl upside down to check the numbers, a ball bearing fell out. Where does this go?

So from my understanding...

With the carb upside down, I remove the gasket and set the float height to 1.281 from mounting surface of carb to top of float? I also set the drop height to 1.750? Is this correct?

If that's the case, mine was way off. Reason for checking all this is my 292 is blowing a good amount of black smoke. Can a float set incorrectly cause the engine to blow black smoke?

Before I adjusted, the distance from base to float was 1.500 and drop down was 1.969

Yeah....float drop is 1 3/4" from what I remember.

And blowing black smoke could be caused by running over rich.

Even with the a/f screw only half turn out from seated it still blew black smoke. That's when I decided to take the carb off and check the float

Yeah...1 9/32 for float height and 1 3/4" for float drop.

Are the measurements taken with the gasket on or off?

To adjust the initial settings, make sure the throttle stop screw is set close. Make sure that choke is not engaged. Loosen the screw on drivers side that pushes on the throttle linkage, once it no longer touches the linkage stop. Look down through the top of the carb and make sure that the blades are fully closed. Then screw it in about 1/4 turn past touching.

Next, adjust the choke idle screw on lower right side same as above.

Lastly, screw the idle mixture screw all the way in (gently). Then out 2 full turns. This should get you pretty well in the ballpark.

Some of the later model B's had a fast idle adjust on the top of the carb, but I don't see it on your model.

Did you find the model #? Should start will 700_ _ _ _

Here is a pic of a model B with the fast idle adjust screw just for future reference....see the large flat screw with the straight slot to the left of the air horn assembly.

The number I found is 7024561. I attached a picture if this and also of an area with a cap where there a screw in the picture you posted. There's also a black screw in the picture and I'm not sure what that's for

They also have metering jets from .046-.084 for these 1bbls....so you can really get it fined tuned to your application

Check your spark plugs. If they are pitch black...your running to rich. The black smoke could be a variety of things. That engine hasn't been ran for awhile I take it so if it smokes I wouldn't be surprised. Your suddenly bringing something back to life..kinda like you getting up in the morning...and not a second after you get up you go for a jog. lol Needless to say you'll have troubles keeping balance! Same with an engine....when they sit for years on end...the top end can get fairly dry and start to collect moister. The cylinder walls also get bone dry. Then suddenly they start moving again and its dry until the oil pressure kicks up and oil spreads around the engine again...cams can easily go flat during this time. Valve seals can dry up and gaskets harden...so.....little smoke is nothing to worry about. lol You just have a diesel! But it does sound like your float is set low.
